Disillusioned with the war
I hate to be the bearer of bad news for Dave Leja, "Railing against Democrats" Letters to the Editor, April 18, but his beloved GOP sent along a contingent of Congressmen to meet with Syrian leaders just before Congresswoman Pelosi met with them. So, were these Republicans on the same defeat-securing mission Mr. Leja claimed Congresswoman Pelosi was on? And how do you secure defeat if it has already happened?
I believe Mr. Leja's statement about "some people" becoming disillusioned with the war. If by "some people" he means the vast majority of our country, not to mention the few remaining "coalition of the willing" countries. Why shouldn't they be disillusioned? The war was started under false pretenses, it has been poorly managed, it has achieved no goal beyond replacing one evil man with hundreds, it has drained our treasury, it has, as determined by the Pentagon, become a key recruitment tool for terrorists, and has caused thousands of American deaths as well as up to 600,000 Iraqi civilian deaths. You would have to be delusional to not be disillusioned by this whole affair.
My only suggestion to you, Mr. Leja is, if you are truly worried about the demise of our country when Iraq falls, is pick up a rifle and replace one of those poor soldiers over there. Recruitment standards are now such that just about any pro-war chicken-hawk under 55 is eligible for service. I know if I felt as strongly about our country's imminent destruction, as Mr. Leja does, I would be the first one in line to defend it.
And Mr. Leja, I am a veteran, a union worker, and I have always supported my country. That is precisely why I speak out against this incompetent, lying, draft-dodging (almost to a man) administration.
