A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL
In the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre, the media has placed the tragedy in a fatalistic frame. It’s as though nothing can be done, they would have us think, to stop America’s fascination with gun violence.
But much could be done, were it not for a well-entrenched, well-financed gun industry. The firearms industry combines with the radical branch of pro-gun zealots (mostly white males threatened by social change) to create a nation armed to the teeth.
Don’t be fooled for a minute that it’s about something other than money.
Just take the experience of a state senator from Illinois, Dan Kotowski. Kotowski is co-sponsoring legislation to remove military style weapons from our streets. As a result, he got sent a message from the gun industry profiteers the other day. Some residents of his Chicago suburban district (he would have been Hillary Clinton’s state senator, were she still living in her childhood Park Ridge home) received a mailer on the very day of the VT mass shooting that claimed Kotowski was trying to take guns away from our GIs in Iraq!
Who paid for the deceitful, preposterous, Karl Rove-like oversized postcard?
Well, the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
Who does the National Shooting Sports Foundation represent? According to their website: "The National Shooting Sports Foundation is the trade association for the shooting, hunting and firearms industry. Formed in 1961, the National Shooting Sports Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with a membership of more than 3,600 manufacturers, distributors, retailers, sportsmen's organizations and publishers."
In short, the National Shooting Sports Foundation is about making more money for the firearms industry.
