Impeachment means accountability. In a Democracy politicians, even Presidents, are supposed to be accountable to the People. It’s up to the voters to hold politicians accountable by voting them in or out of office. Sometimes we can’t wait for election day. Impeachment is the Constitutionally prescribed remedy for politicians, especially Presidents, that need to be brought to book. No one is above the law and in a democracy the People, not the President nor other politicians, rule.
Impeachment starts in the House and concludes in the Senate; but the impetuous must be the people. Impeachment will happen when the people tell their representatives it will happen. People must put the pressure on their elected officials at all levels of government. The pressure on politicians must be unbearable. They must be made to stand with the People, or against us. That kind of pressure takes all manner of people acting in all manner of ways. All pressure is good pressure, as long as its goal is making the system work for the People.
Don’t Wait for Pollsters, Pundits or Politicians
Start Seeing Impeachment
Many Americans believed the Democrats would save them from George Bush if they were elected in sufficient numbers in 2006. That was a pipe dream just like the Anybody But Bush strategy that failed the peace movement in 2004. No sooner than the Democrats achieved a majority in Congress, then newbie Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, took impeachment “off the table”. So much for “Just wait until we have subpoena power.” So much for the Democrats holding Bush accountable. Except for the freshmen, almost all the Democrats reelected either voted for the war or voted repeatedly to fund the war. None of them could be held accountable by election for two to six years. We can’t afford to wait for the politicians.
Impeachment is About Reinvigorating Democracy
So, who’s going to put the demos back in democracy if the politicians aren’t? The people. You and me, that’s who. You have to make up your mind. Do you want democracy-rule of the people, or are you willing to suffer more of the same kakistocracy-rule by the worse. Everyday that passes, it just gets harder. Not that it will ever be impossible. It’s just that things get very hard sitting in a Neo-Conservative Gated Community-know what I mean?
