This is a very long article. It may seem too local to some. It is an interview with Bill Curry, who ran unsuccessfully against Connecticut Governor John Rowland on the platform that Rowland was crook, robbing the state blind.
He was
literally laughed at at the time.
Exactly as the Bushistas do now when Dems mention Bush's "malfeance." But do read this. The best parts are not about the local campaign...they are the parts about how this didn't happen in CT over night...that Rowland's corruption started with little things which were ignored by the media, too willing to give this powerful governor a pass.
Sound familiar?
Curry could be describing Bush and the National Media. Finally, towards the end, I like this line...
"The public understands what happened here. This is Connecticut. We are the Constitution State. We were the home of New England town meeting democracy and now we're Louisianna with foliage."========
How Do You Like Me Now?December 21, 2003

Bill Curry planned a gradual end to his yearlong, self-imposed exile from public life. A speech here, an op-ed piece there. Instead, he found himself on the steps of the state Capitol nine days ago, giving interviews to eager reporters who had summoned him to a crime scene. Ah, if only it had been this way in 2002, when he lost another election to Gov. John G. Rowland.

Hartford Courtant: Isn't there an argument to be made that Rowland has not yet been accused of a crime? He maintains that he has the ability to govern. Shouldn't he be given a chance to either be indicted and found guilty or to try to govern now?Bill Curry: The governor is of course loathe to characterize it, but he's just - but he's just copped to the charge. What most of the governor's remaining defenders have learned in the last few days, have recognized in the last few days, first of all, Gov. Rowland is a man who lies compulsively and casually about matters large and small. The effect of this realization on the public is crippling to the governor himself. If allowed to continue to fester, if no one acts, the entire system will be as disgraced as the governor.
Right now the governor is in full James Cagney mode. You know, saying, in effect, "Come and get me, coppers. I'm going to fend you off and cling to power as long as I possibly can no matter what the price."
And there's nothing he is in trouble for now that he did since the election. It's all been stuff that happened, that was knowable before the election.Yes, it was knowable. I do believe that anyone who wanted to know would know.
And you did a lot through a series of press releases to get it out - press releases that you contend were not given their due in the coverage. We did. And again, pain me though it may to remember it or to say it, but my hometown newspaper was the worst and unfortunately the most important.
