Clinton, in Iowa, Vows to ‘Renew the Promise of America’
By PATRICK HEALY

DES MOINES, Jan. 27 — With a 12-piece jazz band rocking out and nearly 3,000 Iowans watching curiously, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton began her presidential campaign road show here on Saturday by asking a gymnasium full of Democrats to help her become the nation’s first female leader.

“Well, I’m Hillary Clinton,” she started off. “I’m running for president, and I’m in it to win it.”

“I know there are people who either say or wonder, Would we ever elect a woman president? And I don’t think we’ll know until we try — and I’m going to try, and I’m going to try with your help,” Mrs. Clinton said to some of her loudest applause. “We are good at breaking barriers and going places where no one has gone before.”

To which a woman in the audience replied, “You go, girl.”..
