Dying for the Bush legacy
This LTTE probably won't be published in my local newspaper (the Chicago Tribune) so I'm posting it here first:

Dying for the Bush legacy

President Bush can't admit to the American people -- and perhaps especially to himself -- that he has sacrificed in vain the lives of thousands of our citizens in uniform. He refuses to go down in history as the president who committed a colossal strategic blunder in the Middle East, added fuel to the fires of terrorism, and lost a war. And so he will call for sending more troops to die in a country that posed no "grave and gathering" threat to us and is now embroiled in a civil war that resulted from his own refusal to recognize reality.

Reality can't be refused. The United States military can't prevent Sunnis and Shiites from killing each other. We can't win hearts and minds or implant our values through the barrel of a gun. We cannot fix Iraq with the same tool that broke it, even if America had the political will to send 10 times the number of additional troops that Bush wants.

This president has deluded himslef into thinking that additional investment in the same course of action will produce different results. Those who argue we shouldn't abandon Iraq because of the consequences need to understand it is beyond our ability to control the outcome. The lives and the hundreds of billions of dollars yet unspent in Iraq would be much better invested in bolstering our defenses at home and ending our dependence on Middle East oil.

The only thing George W. Bush can do to redeem what remains of his legacy is to change the disastrous course he set and to place the welfare of our troops and our country above his own ego and political agenda. The life of one volunteer soldier is worth more than that.

2. Removing him from office
was something I considered for my closing sentence, but I wanted others to draw that conclusion for themselves.

Yes, I saw chimpy's expression when he announced "mission accomplished" -- as I have so sadly witnessed this sorry excuse for a president for the last 6 years. After all this time and the numbing ecxess of his crimes, I have not yet reached outrage overload. There is still some left in the tank, which fueled this letter.
