Editor's note: Lou Dobbs' commentary appears every Wednesday on CNN.com.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The midterm elections, which produced the highest voter turnout in more than two decades, resulted in not only the Democratic takeover of both the House and the Senate, but a new political reality that has some free-trade-at-all-cost Republicans writhing in pain.

The free-trade orthodoxy, made up not only of Republicans but still a sizeable number of Democrats, appears to be spouting ever-louder lies and disturbing distortions of truth and reality as their desperation over the ascension of the "Lou Dobbs Democrats" on November 7 is becoming more shrill, verging on outright panic.

To these media merchants of obfuscation and hollow meaningless language, the very idea that ideology and blind partisanship may be giving way to truth must be frightening indeed.

"Roll Call" Executive Editor Mort Kondracke in his latest column implores President Bush to vigorously defend so-called free trade against alleged protectionist Democrats. Kondracke laments, "A tide of populism, protectionism, nationalism and xenophobia is washing over the country, fueled by right-wing radio talk show hosts, CNN firebrand Lou Dobbs and legitimate concerns that U.S. workers are falling behind in the global struggle for jobs and good wages."

condt......................................

If the sheeple have awoken and they are committed to showing up at the polls, then the elites do indeed have a lot to be frightened about.

We shall see..

2. There will have to be many more who are cold & hungry before that happens.
Too many are still too comfortable, even if they are not quite as comfortable as they used to be.

3. Love how Morto ConDragola ranks his list of populist stimuli
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 12:46 PM by kenny blankenship
The actual conditions and actual concerns of the populist revolt come dead last. Before the people in revolt, and whatever they might actually be experiencing and thinking, he lists well known "agitators" in the media like Talk Radio hosts and CNN's Lou Dobbs, as though they were more important than the reality that they comment on. Indeed, before permitting any allusion to any of the real conditions faced by the voters, Count Con Dragola characterizes the electoral results as a rising "tide"of populism carefully linked with 3 other -isms, -isms which all politely educated gentlefolk of the upper middle classes already know are bad things: nationalism, protectionism, and xenophobia. It's easy to accept that AM talk radio hosts promote jingoist nationalism and xenophobia. Anyone owning a radio for the last 15 years would know that that's true. And had these hectoring fussbudgets and rabble-rousers on talk radio and television not interfered with the electoral cycle, Count Morto suggests, those Dangerous Democrats would never have come to power.

One small problem: talk radio has been the most Republican dominated branch of political media ever, unless you considered pamphlets put out by one source like the John Birch Society or Focus on the Family to somehow be their own category. This election made no difference to the political preference of Hate Radio. The haters still hated Democrats and also hated anyone, like Michael J. Fox, who dared to sympathize with causes that Democrats championed. They apparently thought that merely intoning the horrifying phrase MADAME Speaker, NANCY Pelosi, of SAN FRANCISCO would enough to turn out the GOP base and to keep swing voters in their habit of voting Republican, no matter how mad they might be about the war or various corruption scandals. The AM band is still the home of rabid Republican demagoguery and it's still hostile to Democratic Party viewpoints, as it is to Democratic fringe constituencies. That would leave Lou Dobbs as the lone gunman who killed the permanent Republican Majority (if we are determined as Count Morto is to relegate objective economic conditions and widespread disgust with political corruption to an unimportant, trailing role, eclipsed by the power of "xenophobic" propaganda). However, to blame the Republican loss of Congress on one didactic cable news anchor, whom most voters aren't even watching, is a rather ridiculous essay. Count Morto therefore needed imaginary accomplices for Dobbs, shadowy perpetrators who remain nameless in his essay but are understood by his gentle readership to be everywhere bouncing about the atmosphere. They don't need to be named. Their legion is indicated by the infinitely expansive term "Talk Radio". His readership recoils before the bad manners of this mob. But when you think about any actual faces and voices from this mob, Rush Limbaugh? G. Gordon Liddy? Glenn Beck? Bill O'Reilly? and consider what they say and who they support, the idea that they could have had anything to do with fomenting a populist revolt to the Democratic Party is revealed as a stupid lie.

6. Bush to lecture on protectionism?
That is just not going to work out! The people in this country are quite frankly getting tired of his bull*!it! He doesn't have the credibility to lecture anyone, and neither does any faux news know-it-alls.
