The Immigration Show
Here in the DU office, we sometimes keep the TV on in the background so we can keep one eye on the news. Or, perhaps it would be more correct to refer to it as "news" in quotation marks, since our television is usually set to CNN, which (despite the promise implied in its name) isn't exactly known for its hard-hitting news reporting. The fact that CNN is our news channel of choice does not imply any sort of endorsement of CNN on our part. All the 24-hour cable news channels are basically excrement, and I can't even bring myself to say that CNN is the least bad of the three. The only possible explanation I can come up with for the fact that we watch CNN is that perhaps somewhere deep in the primitive reptile part of my brain when I think "cable news" the synapse associated with the name "CNN" is the first one to fire. Followed quickly thereafter by the synapse for "Fox News." And then a few seconds later the synapse for "that other news channel, whatever it's called" fires weakly. In fact, I think the word "fire" isn't really appropriate to describe what that synapse does. In reality, it just kinda mumbles something incoherent and then rolls over and falls back asleep.

But getting back to the point: We've had CNN on in the background for the last couple days, and as far as I can tell there were exactly five major news items: There was some sort of shake-up in the White House. There were some protests and/or rioting in France, for no readily apparent reason. A blind man rescued some kittens from a house fire. There was something involving two "dirty bombs." And Lou Dobbs is very, very angry about immigrants.

Man, that guy is angry. As I sit here watching, I'm starting to think there is a chance he might actually smash through my television set, put me and EarlG in headlocks under each of his arms, and knock our heads together like a pair of coconuts. EarlG is an immigrant and I own a chihuahua, so we've got a good reason to be scared.

But don't take my word for it. On Monday night, Lou had the president of La Raza on his program and simply refused to let her string a single complete sentence together. Whenever she tried to do so, Lou's eyeballs would pop out, steam would pour out of his ears, and his head would split open down the center so sinewy tongues of fire could spray directly from the top of his severed neck and lash her across the face.

On Wednesday Lou is taking his "Broken Borders" show on the road, broadcasting LIVE FROM MEXICO. I know because throughout the day today, CNN has been flashing a 24-hour countdown clock which shows the exact number of hours, minutes, and seconds until the program begins. (Seriously.) My sources tell me that Lou plans to take on a dozen Mexican "Ultimate Fighters" in a no-holds-barred, one-against-twelve X-treme cage match. If he does not succeed in murdering all of them with his bare hands, a pack of hungry lions will be let loose in the cage to finish the job. It's all part of his master plan to overtake Bill O'Reilly as "The Angriest Man On Cable News." To his credit, at least Lou's been bashing George W. Bush throughout this whole spectacle.

But Lou Dobbs isn't the only person who seems to have gone completely cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs on the issue of immigration. The craziest sonofabitch turns out to be US Rep. James Sensenbrenner, a Republican (of course) and the the heir to the Kotex fortune. (Insert your own joke here.) His bill to crack down on illegal immigration would create a 700-mile fence along the US-Mexican border, make it a felony to be in the United States illegally, and -- get this -- make it a crime to provide help to any illegal immigrant. Hillary Clinton, who doesn't exactly have a reputation of shooting from the hip, said that Sensenbrenner's bill "would literally criminalize the good Samaritan and probably even Jesus himself."

This harsh partisan attack had conservative Republicans groping for their Bibles so they could point out the scripture that proves her wrong. They were ultimately unsuccessful, as none of them had actually seen a Bible -- let alone read one -- for decades. One enterprising Republican staffer was able to dig up a faded piece of paper entitled "Bible verses showing that the Gays are Abnormal and Unnatural," but alas it was of no practical value in this situation.

To the great alarm of every Americans with higher brain function, it would seem that a majority of the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives is as insane as Rep. Sensenbrenner, as they have already passed his bill.

Fortunately, at this point it appears unlikely that Sensenbrenner's bill will become the law of the land. A Senate committee has approved much less draconian immigration reform legislation with unanimous Democratic support. And at the moment, the president seems to want to sign something closer to the Senate bill. But the most important reason why the Sensenbrenner bill would never become law is because it doesn't have the support of the Republican Party's paymasters -- the corporate interests who take advantage of the cheap labor of illegal immigrants.

So what we actually have here is "The Immigration Show" -- kinda like the Lou Dobbs program, but played on a national stage by conservative Republican pandering for votes. If this sounds familiar, there's a reason. "The Immigration Show" is a lot like "The Abortion Show" and the "The Gay Marriage Show." The conservative wing of the party makes a lot of noise, and they win a lot of votes. But in the end, the only laws that get passed are the ones that meet the quiet approval of the party's corporate wing.

 be very skeered!
It is pathetic that we don't have at least one channel where we can actually get some unbiased news.
I have the same dilemma when trying to find something worthy.

5. And the mighty Wurlitzer spins on ...
Any sort of empty posturing is better than talking about the Iraq war or the deficit or the corporate rape of our government, environment and economy. The prostitution of this entire lickspittle Congress and its supine presentation of its arse to the money power leads one to vacillate between nausea and laughter.

Mr.Dobbs, of course, is a professional actor, although not a very good one.

6. Immigration Man....
Immigration Man Lyrics

Crosby, Nash
Immigration Man

There I was at the immigration scene
Shining and feeling clean
Could it be a sin?
I got stopped by the immigration man
He says he doesn't know if he can
Let me in

Let me in, immigration man
Can I cross the line and pray
I can stay another day
Let me in, immigration man
I won't toe your line today
I can't see it anyway, hey-y

There he was with his immigration face
Giving me a paper chase
But the son was coming
'Cause all at once he looked into my space
And stamped a number over my face
And he sent me running

Won't you let me in, immigration man
Can I cross the line and pray
I can stay another day
Won't you let me in, immigration man
I won't toe your line today
I can't see it anyway

Here I am with my immigration form
It's big enough to keep me warm
When a cold wind's coming
So go where you will
As long as you thing you can
You'd better watch out - watch out for the man
Anywhere you're going

Come on and let me in, immigration man
Can I cross the line and pray
Take your fingers from the tray
Let me in, irritation man
I won't toe your line today
I can't see it anyway

7. You guys have great "fortitude" keeping CNN on all day....
and you captured the triviality...with lol's...good fun.

It's amazing what they DON'T Cover...which your own site does...ain't it. :D. It' seems to me DU get's the news two to three days ahead of time before the BushBot Cables have time to send their 14 year old RESEARCHERS to comb through it, filtering it by way of Rove...so that Blitzer and the shills can chirp it out. Even then...so much is lost on the "cutting room floor" one wonders why we here, including myself, freak out and chirp about how bad it is for many posts in GD FORUM!

You'd think we would learn that what we are looking for ...just ain't out there these days...

9. Skinner, with all due respect you "forgot" to mention a couple of things..
....

First, Spanish speaking DJ's and Spanish speaking radio talk show hosts admitted that they purposely and systematically got the Latinos in a huff over this issue of illegal aliens, telling them to hit the streets. Well, they hit the streets, with their Mexican flags in hand, rarely an American flag to be seen.

Second, and this is what I can't figure out about normally pretty fair minded Dues. With all the discussions about illegal aliens I'd like someone to mention - and keep to this one issue - that illegal aliens are here ILLEGALLY. We have rules and laws that govern our society and I am expected to follow these rules and laws or I face the consequences if I don't. So why shouldn't illegal aliens be expected to follow our laws from day one? Doesn't matter if they agree with or like those laws - they are our laws and illegal aliens are coming into our country.

I admit my views on the issue of illegal aliens are definitely not in line with what is usually seen up and down the DU forums. This is the one and only issue I part company with democrats/liberals on. Why? I lived the issue of illegal aliens up close and personal for years and moved because of it.

I have absolutely nothing against immigration at all - most of our ancestors were immigrants to this country - but my objection is when it's not done by the rules. It doesn't matter that some consider the rules unfair - they are still the rules - and sometimes life plain sucks for all of us.

Now, I guess all I can say in closing is here is the other side of the argument on illegal aliens.

10. Your thread really made me curious so I turned on CNN
about an hour ago. Lo and behold, I've heard two pieces which were VERY sympathetic to illegal immigrants. One was entitled "Death Train" and it examined the extremely dangerous practice of train-hopping (which illegal immigrants engage in to enter this country). The second featured a black banker (?) opining on the great immigrant tradition in this country.

While they have given a few heads up for Lou's show, they aren't showing any clips.

My guess is that CNN is playing to the elite with the pro-illegal immigration pieces and playing to the populace with the Lou Dobbs ads.

11. Dobbs is pretending to be a Populist.....but it's all obscured...stilll
gotta give him some credit...even though we need to parse every word our of his mouth with our "OWN" figures.

Still he can be a good watch.........

Why haven't all the laws we've already passed since the 70's having to do with illegals been honored..? :eyes: Ceasar Chavez gave his life devoted to the plight of farm workers...and Dobbs and the Chimp and some of our Dems are jumping on this like it's the first time they ever heard of an "immigration problem." It's :puke: and it's all to take attention away from the REAL BUSH PROBLEM...FAILURE IN IRAQ...FAILURE WITH KATRINA...FAILURE ON 9/11 and A STOLEN ELECTION!!!

No news will get out while the Illegal Immmigrant Debate goes on. And, the HYPOCRACY of showing THOUSANDS OF MEXICAN/AMERICANS in the streets when HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF US HERE AND ABROAD MARCHED TO STOP THE IRAQ INVASION...and MARCHED to get us OUTTA THERE. Still...WE weren't covered because Business Interests are threatened by thosands of Latino's (whom I admire for getting out there and standing up for their RIGHTS) but there should be "EQUAL COVERAGE."

12. Cesar Chavez was a staunch opponent of illegal immigration...
at least during the years that his movement was actually effective. During the 15 years when wages and benefits improved for migrant farm workers (not to be confused with illegal immigrants) he fought AGAINST the importation of mexican strikebreakers.
Since the 1980's, which marked the beginning of the massive influx of illegal immigrants from the south, most of the gains made by the migrant workers have been lost.

As for Lou Dobbs, he is admired by many simply b/c he is the only voice on the idiot box which calls attention to the selling off, and out, of the US. I understand that his rhetoric regarding illegal immigration is off-putting to some, but unfortunately our elected representatives have failed to step up to the plate and present this issue in any kind of meaningful context.

I'm entirely unclear as to why you think corporations would feel threatened by the protests, they bought and paid for them.

"fresh packaged salads" are fighting tooth and claw to keep the "Illegals and otherise" here in the US. Not forgetting our HOSPITAL INDRUSTRY..including the NURSING HOMES and the Restaurant Hotel/Cruise Workers and the Gameing and whatever business like "Convenience Stores" who rely on the shifting "imported workers." No one mentions the huge influx of South Africans and the migrant imported Chinese workers in your local "Imperial Palace Fast Food Chinese Buffet" who rely on slave labor that's shifted from state to state where these people are really abused and the state health departments are constantly shutting them down. GACK!
If we really got into Immigration and illegals it would be worse that what we are seeing with Latinos and Hispanics from not only Mexico/Guatemala.
SHEESH!

My comment about Chavez was that he fought for Improved Conditions" for Immigrant workers and that laws were put on the Books in Congress when DEMS Controlled it.

This crap we are hearing tries to make out that this is a NEW ISSUE...and that there weren't already laws to stop employers from abusing Immigrants/Illegal and otherwise and to OVERSEE how many "undocumenteds" come into our country.

This is a crap Fiasco designed to take time away from Iraq/Abramoff and the Major Scandals with Lobbyists and others who have taken down our Constitution and turned it into Toilet Paper to be FLUSHED AWAY!

That's what I was saying.....my 2 Cents. The Corporate Whore Media at work again to cover up with kitty litter the BUSH Empire..and the Emperor who was "put in place."

Smoke and Mirrors.....for the masses. Not that there isn't an underlying problem...but it pales in comparison to the OVERIDING PROBLEM of an INSTALLED P-RESIDENT...riding on his Dynasty Glory enabled by weak Dems and Repugs who have an ARMY OF GOD behind them.

14. A guest worker program IS a new issue.
Sure, people have been pissed off about illegal immigration for a long time but the pending legislation puts the issue front and center. Do you REALLY think that guest worker legislation is being created and debated in order to serve as a smokescreen for *'s misdeeds? I'm sorry but that just seems odd. While I have no doubt that * will use this opportunity to slip some bad news out, e.g., the Abramoff sentence, guest worker legislation has been a long time goal of cheap labor conservatives. They've just got to figure out a way to shove it down the throats of a population that isn't interested (and that would definitely include *'s "ARMY OF GOD").

I'm also not terribly sure that the media would have given much time to Abramoff regardless of the illegal immigration issue. When I turned on the tube a few minutes ago the issues du jour on CNN and MSNBC were Laci Peterson and Natalie Holloway, respectively. LOL

(actually I think the distinction about Cesar Chavez was pretty important)

15. We probably agree more than disagree but my point is that
I doubt Congress will do much on this issue except Smoke and Mirrors.

By the time they finish with amendments and such the final bill that they are supposedly working towards being a fair solution will be so watered down as to be ineffectual. Neither Dems nor Repugs want this hot button issue to go down one way or the other that could give one side an advantage over the other. The fact that it's even an issue now is because of the Repugs "fence for the borders" and the Ports issue bringing up "Broken Borders" where "terrorists" can come in (the Repugs say) and this then brought up the Illegal issue which goes to immigration and both parties are falling all over each other prentending to do reforms that won't come to pass, imho.

The other thing is that I think a huge number of construction jobs are going to vanish as the Housing Bubble starts to leak and where are all those thousands who've been doing all the building going to go? We have so many construction workers who are probably illegal here in NC that I can't imagine what will happen to them when the construction stops. Will they go back or will they be absorbed into other areas. Plus we have Haitians and Kenyons and lord knows how many here who are working in Convenience stores and packaging our groceries. They shift around working several months at a time and then you never see them again. No one ever talks about where they come from and where they go.

Focusing on the Hispanics has caused huge demonstrations which fits nicely into the right wing racist causes (mentioning why they carry the Mexican flag) and the fear that they are taking Americans jobs. On the other hand most folks down here in the Red South understand they are building the McMansions, New Shopping Centers and processing our chickens and pigs in the Agri-Business factories. So, we see them..know they are here and they are being exploited while many are angry at giving them health care and having them in our schools.

How will congress be able to solve this? I don't think they can in an election year. And, I have no idea myself what can be done about it...

As I understand it, they're gone for two weeks. I know it's Passover and Easter and whatever, but how could so many be so useless for such a long period of time. Don't they have the WHOLE MONTH OF AUGUST off, too?

It's a refreshing sight to see compared to threads in the other forums that were almost as rabid as Sensenbrenner and Lou Dobbs combined. That's pretty scary sight, to me anyway. Astonished to see the praises for Dobbs and even Cafferty on this issue - our little lemmings falling right in line singing the GOP talking points - and you are so right - just another show like the Gay Marriage and the Abortion Shows - anything to appeal to the lowest denominator and that can kick up a lot of fire and hate. Not to be outdone, we were treated to the Cynthia McKinney show, same deal as all the others..

A word about Dobbs, it was amazing to watch his astonishment when called a racists and a xenophobe by certain segments of the population - he was "stunned", "shocked" and he just doesn't understand how anyone can confuse the issue.

That particular interview with the President of La Raza which you cited, was probably the most dramatic display of his psychopathic obsession over the issue and his deeply seated racists attitudes.. And Congress and the Republican party only have Lou Dobbs to thank for this insanity - (dispite Dobb's critisims of Bush)...

anyway, enough of my rambling, your post was a pleasure to read...
