Evangelical teens rally in S.F.
Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Staff Writer

Saturday, March 25, 2006

More than 25,000 evangelical Christian youth landed Friday in San Francisco for a two-day rally at AT&T Park against "the virtue terrorism" of popular culture, and they were greeted by an official city condemnation and a clutch of protesters who said their event amounted to a "fascist mega-pep rally."

"Battle Cry for a Generation" is led by a 44-year-old Concord native, Ron Luce, who wants "God's instruction book" to guide young people away from the corrupting influence of popular culture.

Luce, whose Teen Mania organization is based in Texas, kicked off a three-city "reverse rebellion" tour Friday night intended to counter a popular culture that he says glamorizes violence and sex. The $55 advance tickets for two days of musical performances and speeches were sold out, but walk-up admission was available for $199.

western culture is corrupting muslim youth, too.

i encourage them to fly to quetta, kabul, mecca, etc., and spread their message in a more welcoming environment.

on edit: these wack jobs also have a little in common with Adbusters, whose analysis i agree with: it is the relentless commercialization of life that debases it.

9. "Teen Mania" - I'll say. And paying for the privilege, as well.
25,000 paying teens in SF.

500,000 Hispanics show up on the streets of LA - priceless.

18. I WONDERED what the heck that was!
I was driving right past PacBell park on Saturday morning and got caught up in the traffic/pedestrians going to the event. First thing I noticed (besides the age group) was the overwhelming whiteness of the attendees. Not easy to do in San Francisco. ;)

I didn't see (on the streets anyway) any dress/signage that I woudl find offensive -- didn't hear enough of the music/speeches if there was creepy stuff going on. If I'd known what it was I would have stayed longer to do a little research or hang with a sign that said "Jesus loves "fags"!" or "Jesus was a liberal!". :D

19. Why Didn't They Go To Salt Lake City? Or Someplace Else?
Someplace red and welcoming, soneplace where they would be right at home. Better yet, why not stay home, and save jet fuel?

Kids: over-privileged, self-indulgent, goof-offs.
