Brook in NYT "GWB is Lincoln"
Yes, he says he is talking about candidates for '08. But it is clear that he is saying that GWB is the greatest, most courageous Pres. since Lincoln.

http://select.nytimes.com/2006/03/26/opinion/26brooks.html?hp

It's Times Select. But here is the pertinent passage;

The Civil War was of course bloodier and more dismal than anything we're facing today. Leadership blunders led to more American deaths in single hours than we've seen during three years in Iraq. Lincoln's opponents argued that the South was too culturally and economically dissimilar to be reconciled with the North, that blacks could not live freely and equally with whites.

But as the situation grew dire, Lincoln did not scale back his ambitions or grow more "realistic." On the contrary, he enlarged and revolutionized the meaning of the war. He emancipated the slaves. He portrayed the war as a front in a worldwide struggle for liberty.

The comparison is clear. And just for those who don't get it he later says this of those who opposed Lincoln (or is that Bush?):

This is the multiculturalism that puts aside the universal claims of the Declaration of Independence, which Lincoln cherished. Instead, it says, democracy is good for many cultures, but not for Arabs.

What a wanker!

1. Un-fucking-believable.
These people have completely lost touch with reality.

17. That assumes bobo Brooks ever was in touch with reality
Looking at his writings over the years, I think that's a questionable assumption.

26. Not necessarily.
"I have to pay money to read that tripe?" I don't know about your local library system, but with my Chicago Public Library Card, I can go through their website to get all the content in the major papers (and minor ones, too).

4. I'll just bet most of the people who read Brooks are liberals
who, out of sheer fascination, want to see what novel way he will try to justify the Iraq debacle this week.

Will Friedman and Brooks never run out of ways to embarrass themselves?

5. Ah, the NYT, the paper that said there were WMDs in Iraq.
Lincoln freed the slaves. Bush made us all slaves to debt through his budgets, the bankruptcy bill, his illegal war, his energy "policy" that favors oilmen, and his pro-outsourcing policies.

The world loved Lincoln except for the tiny southern region that hated Lincoln. The world hates bush except for the tiny southern region that favors bush.

6. Ain't it time to sew another star on Old Glory?
The Civil War, besides being about slavery was ALSO fought to keep the country united instead of looking like the Balkins with waring factions on every boarder. Sorry, it is NOT worth blood and treasure to give democracy to every tyrannical government on the planet. :grr:

8. Brooks is a circus parade attendent.
His job is to follow the elephants and clean up poop along the route. George could never fail us in Bobo's world.

He's got too much of an emotional and intellectual investment in this Party and this administration, in particular.

9. And I Am Marie of Romania!!
to quote Dorothy Parker on manic delusion:

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Romania.

13. to additionally quote Dorothy Parker, "What fresh hell is this?"
I think about this quote nearly every day when I read about BushCo's latest outrages. Brooks in not only delusional but criminally insane if he thinks Bush is in any way comparable to Lincoln.

11. I Never Thought I'd See A Stupider Comparison.....
....than that senile old fool Zell Miller's placing Dubya's governing skills in the same league as Churchill's, a while back. But here comes Brooks with a Lincoln comparison. What a pathetic, talentless, right-wing lickspittle. And what an indictment of the "Times," for giving this douchebag a column and a paycheck to voice such idiocy...

15. Lincoln was a rat in our history..all of what we were taught was lies.
History rewards the traitors to our Constition... The "historians" have always had a hidden agenda.. To destroy America because 'The Framers' said: "All men are created equal"

History is written by the victors, not the victims.

Some in this nation believe that some are more equal than others... They are the traitors to our "Constitution" because of their racism, and belief that are a Superior race.

I am not among this bunch... All are equal under the Lord Jesus Christ. And Our Constitution.

It's Sunday .. I get to yell.

It is the people who claim: "All people are not equal".. that are my Nemesis

19. I read that. It's outrageous. But what about Doobie last week?
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 10:20 AM by robertarctor
Yeah, Doobie comparing Jethro Mussolini to Lincoln was fairly outrageous, even though he negates his entire argument midway through the column by stating that Lincoln followed the Constitution and tried to serve the greater good, which Chimpoleon clearly hasn't done. But his column last week, the one about the "thymotic urge," or why everyone is motivated by personal recognition, was even funnier. Talk about a pundit getting intoxicated by the fumes of his own flatulence.

I think a lot of us liberals are reading Doobie's columns for amusement now. He can't be serious.

I think it's the Illuminati working with the Tri-Lateralist to insure a one world anti-Jacksonian oligarchy. :-)

24. Brooks should ask Bush about Haiti and Venezuela then

In one we physically removed the democratically elected president, and in the other, we tried to remove the democratically elected president through a recall and a coup.

The goal is not democracy but the appearance of democracy and a compliant government, that doesn't negotiate contracts with our oil companies and other corporations, but simply turns over their nation's natural resources in exchange for personal bribes.

If Saddam had followed our orders, he would still be in office and free to torture and gas as he pleased, just as the dictators in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Pakistan are.
