Bush Jokes are No longer Funny

There was time when Bush jokes and cartoons were funny. I still maintain a large collection of them myself. But it’s difficult to look at them now or those in the papers. It would be like a decent German citizen looking at Hitler cartoons in the Berlin newspapers in 1945, if such were allowed, as Germany was turned into rubble day by day. Bush humor—if there ever was any -- is long gone. It represents a dilemma of sorts for political cartoonists. What more can they do? George Bush is a totally failed president - without doubt the worst president in American history, and he is doing his best—albeit probably unconsciously – to bring the country slowly, but inexorably, to ruin. The Republican Congress is totally spineless, trying nothing more to cling to some concept they call “power,” although they too realize at bottom that “Bush is the worst.” How does one poke fun at all this dreadfulness? Humor, which always clings precariously to truth, has lost its edge, overpowered by gruesome reality.

In the 1930s, after Hitler had come to power but before the real crackdown had begun. That period may be a better comparison to today than Germany in 1945, at the end of the disaster.

4. I agree. Now there's a lot of "what once was funny now is not".

It'll never stop, the anti-Bush is snowballing. They are backed into a corner now, no way out but attempts some "stunts" that play on peoples fears. They are over.

They have nothing good to run on. Look at their campaign site! It's a damn circus.

Our advantage is truth. Unfortunately the truth is ugly, so our brand of sarcasm that makes a humorous point reflects that ugliness.

Almost every song that spike jones did with his city slickers has been covered by annother band.

But not "In Der Fuerer's Face."

One day it just stopped being funny.

6. I told some of my republican friends early on that Bush is such an

insult to America that next time the GOP will nominate a sock puppet, and then finally a sock.

If Rush Limbaugh talked up the sock enough, it would still get 35-40% of the vote, and the mainstream media would look at Democrats like their crazy when they say a sock isn't qualified to run the country.

7. Things are too grim now for humor.

I think in four years I've heard about two jokes on 9/11. Things are grim. I am afraid they are going to get grimmer. In WWII a popular song was "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition." This was sung or played without irony.

8. It's called disaster fatigue or bush fatigue. I never found him funny, I

never can understand his appeal to men. Women I can understand, some women with little self-awareness like the appeal of abusive men, however, men who look up to bush has always amazed me. What do they see in him? He's weak, he's never fought in any war, he's metro-sexual, he's a buffoon, he can't inspire or talk, he's goofy, he's not handsome, he's not charismatic, I just can't put my finger on why men love him?

he's white, he's rich, he represents the status quo, maintains the dominant pecking-order, he kicked alcohol without a program (yeah, right!) and he doesn't represent what these men are, rather, what they ASPIRE to be. And they're as manipulated by fear as everybody else. If they DON'T support this guy and his handlers, they might lose their place in line.

11. Great minds think alike. When Bush was first installed, I collected

local editorial cartoons and put them in my two liberal daughters stockings as Christmas. We had a big laugh! I stopped after two years because they are no longer funny at all. Just abhorrent!
