Urgent Briefing by Leaders of the Religious Liberty Community on the Nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court on Key Religious Liberty Issues

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 17, 2006

Leaders of the religious liberty community will hold a Senate briefing to discuss Judge Samuel Alito's record on religious freedom issues and what is at stake with his nomination for the future of religious liberty protections in America.

Judge Alito has been nominated to fill the seat being vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who has been the decisive vote in many Free Exercise and Establishment Clause decisions. Judge Alito's record reveals a judicial philosophy that is hostile to religious minorities and sympathetic to excessive entanglement of government and religion.

The briefing will address how the potential confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court would drastically reshape and alter longstanding protections in the areas of religious liberty and the separation of church and state. If confirmed to the court, Alito could dramatically impact America's longstanding religious liberty protections.

WHO: Open to all Senators and Senate staff

WHERE: 512 Hart Senate Office Building

WHEN: 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

PANELISTS:
Religious Action Renter for Reform Judaism

Americans United for Separation of Church and State

National Council of Jewish Women

Universalist Unitarian Association of Congregations

African American Ministers in Action
