George McEvoy: Losing hope
Mr. McEvoy is a long-time columnist who once wrote for the old NY Daily Mirror. Here's his latest piece for his current paper, the Palm Beach Post, published in West Palm Beach, FL. The Post covers the Treasure Coast to the Palm Beaches. It is not, as it's name may suggest, the official paper of the kingdom of Palm Beach.

an excerpt:

"As for the spying, President Bush says it's for our protection. We are giving up the rights our ancestors and some of our contemporaries fought and died for in order to protect and preserve our freedoms.

And the thing that gets me is how many Americans — at least those I've seen interviewed on TV — see nothing amiss in that form of logic.

That's the main reason I can't be optimistic this New Year's, the fact that folks don't seem to mind if their phones are tapped or their mail is intercepted. What's next, martial law?

But then, as H.L. Mencken once wrote, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

Happy New Year anyway!

1. The sheeple don't care, it is appalling.
One has to wonder, where if ever, the sheeple will draw a line in the sand and say enough.

2. The Age of No Reason
As McEvoy writes, optimism is a tough virtue these days.
Many posters on these pages have detailed the myriad lies, abuses, and crimes of the ruling party. The world, in case anyone cares, truly does view us (U.S) as idiots. Many of us continue to wonder where the tipping point is. But the truth may be that we have changed as a nation - we are what we are. We are not being led astray to our fundamental values; our fundamental values have changed.
We don't care.
DU members & posters, yes; we still care and we will go to our graves committed to our fundamenatal values of freedom, liberty, and equality for all. But we're the minority in this country.
We (collectively) don't care about having a president as king. We don't care that the government spies on us. We don't care that we invade other countries for no reason at all. It's OK. Pass the salt.
We're trapped in a society of fools, in a nation lost, in a country of followers.
We have arrived in the Age of No Reason.

3. I thought the point was
that those presently squatting on the news dissemination were primarily the ones who don't care and are vitally instrumental to fomenting the mood and illusion NO ONE cares. Apparently that is not true even in the news media. The question is a prosperous people has been deprived of its eyes and eyes and all power. and not told they are slaves but something else more comforting. And still the majority did not vote for all this and must be continually lied to and robbed. One piece of truth continually sends shudders up and down the frenzied lie machine.

Can it fall over when no one has the direct power to give it a shove? Only the beleaguered and slow legal system can grind away its support for the silken shackled sheeple.

Blaming the times, the generation and humanity in general is a further slur that aids in the illusions created by monied frauds. The myth of the professionals and leaders above us has been shattered so it is the people they betray daily who are to blame? Can't vote, can't protest and get it reported, can't use the law with certainty anymore, don't want to start shooting. Welcome to the perils of human history. America is no longer a democracy as such and the dissenters don't really know what they are doing or should do or can do.
