My friend Winston Smith was at a window table, exactly where he said he'd be. He was drinking gin and looking rather dour, just like the old days.

Our meeting place, the Chestnut Tree Cafe, was deserted. As I stepped inside, the waiter glanced my way, then ducked into a back room.

"You should talk to your cell phone company about that dropped connection," Winston said as I sat down. "They owe you a refund."

I was startled. I'd been cut off in mid-conversation with a co-worker a few hours earlier, but how on earth would Winston know that?
