Canadian election meddling backfires
By JOEL CONNELLY
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST

As if being midwife to the vote for Iraq's parliament isn't challenge enough, the Bush administration has invaded Canada's midwinter national election campaign.

Prime Minister Paul Martin needed a flak jacket and a combat helmet after the verbal fire he took this week from David Wilkins, the former South Carolina legislator who is now U.S. ambassador to Canada.

"It may be smart election- year politics to thump your chest and constantly criticize your friend and your No. 1 trading partner," our man in Ottawa told the Canadian Club.

"But it's a slippery slope and all of us should hope that it doesn't have a long-term impact on our relationship," Wilkins added. Wilkins said it is not lost on the Bush administration that "some of your politicians use my country to score political points."

1. When we want your opinion, Wilkins, we'll give it to you.
Fuck off.

3. There's a part of me that actually welcomes this sort of meddling.
Canadians soooo fucking despise Bush and his, um...administration/cabal, that ANY Yank involvement whatsoever will virtually guarantee another Lib government. A veritable "slam dunk", if you will. (Oops...knock on wood...I can't help remembering what happened last time THAT term was used in international politics...)

From the article RE: "If Canadian voters had been given a say in America's 2004 election, Adams added, Bush would have received 15 percent of the vote, and John Kerry a whopping 70 percent."

I think even "15 percent" is being way too kind to the monkey retard. Hell, when even Inuit sustenance hunters in the Arctic, or hermit mountain men in the Yukon, would just LOVE to see Air Force One fall out of the sky via their satellite dishes, ya' just know there's a popularity issue here.

4. White House threatened organizers of Kyoto conference in Montreal
that there would be "consequences" if bill clinton was allowed to speak. What else was Martin to do but rebuke them. I doubt the organizers of the Kyoto conference had much choice when threatened by the WH but to contact our PM. That is his job - to lead the country and make sure rule of law takes place (a world conference is not bullied by a group who have chosen to step out of the process).

Oh? Because the US meddling was behind the scenes then it is okay and Martin is totally left hanging in the wind? I don't think so. We are not stupid.
