Martial Law in the US?
It would be an easy step for the neocon warmongers.

1. FEMA camps and REX 86. Just a little reminder that it can happen here.

2. I've wondered about this - seems like there would be problems
for the admin. There are serious questions concerning declaring martial law: how much military is actually available? How many of the military would follow such orders? Would there actually be support from Congress for this? Would there be support from state governments for this? In other words, what would the compliance level be if the administration was to declare martial law? I'd really like to hear from others who have thought about this.

3. While the traditional wisdom is that a voluntary
military is more like than conscripts to go along with a coup, this presupposes that soldiers are given privileges that they do not wish to give up. This is true in much of the world, but not in the US, and certainly not under the Bush administration. Soldiers are voting with their feet and are not being replaced by eager volunteers, and that tells us that Bush could not count on their loyalty. If there were to be a coup, they would have to rely on well-paid mercenaries, like the ones they use in Iraq.
