They lied

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said on Oct. 10, 2003, that he talked with Karl Rove and Lewis Libby about the CIA leak and that “those individuals assured me they were not involved in this.” Now that we know these two men were intimately involved in releasing classified national security information to the public, it is clear that they both lied to their own press secretary. Lewis Libby, Cheney’s chief of staff, is now charged with lying under oath and obstruction of justice.

Bush said that “if somebody did leak classified information, I’d like to know it, and we will take the appropriate action.” His “appropriate action” has been that he will allow his senior advisers and confirmed liars to work for him until such time as they are charged with a crime and decide to resign. Until that time, their lies seem to be functional in their administration. They were useful when marketing a war; they are now deemed useful by a grand jury in obstructing justice. They were useful in hiding their involvement to the public and they were useful in putting our national security in harm’s way.
