Schiavo attorney blames courts for prolonging case

The attorney for Michael Schiavo told a group of Toledo-area judges and lawyers yesterday that weaknesses in the court system contributed to the legal battle that prolonged the right-to-die case of Mr. Schiavo's late wife.


George Felos, the attorney who represented Mr. Schiavo in the legal tug-of-war to disconnect Terri Schiavo's feeding tube, said the judiciary contributed to the perception that the courts were broken and were unable to reach a decision in the case.

Ms. Schiavo, 41, who had been in a persistent vegetative state for 15 years, died March 31 after attorneys for the House of Representative were unable to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in the case.

Speaking to an audience of about 75 people at the Inverness Club, Mr. Felos said the anti-judiciary sentiment that was created by the Schiavo case was due, in part, to the court allowing the prolonged appeals process to continue...
