It’s sad, but racial profiling is necessary for our safety

I want all Arabs to be stripped naked and cavity-searched if they get within 100 yards of an airport.

I don’t care if they’re being inconvenienced. I don’t care if it seems as though their rights are being violated.

I care about my life. I care about the lives of my family and friends.

I want my life to be back to where it was before 9.11

I don't want to take my shoes off at the airport.

Then please stay at home. do not drive. do not use power tools. do not burn wood or other fuels in the fireplace. remove all knives from the kitchen drawers (except maybe one (1) butterknife carefully wrapped in a protective rubber case). do not use the ATM at your bank---go inside.

5. Racial profiling gives a false sense of security

Even without the obvious moral and Constitutional issues against racial profiling, it's just plain stupid. Resources are tied up investigating and searching innocent people, instead of doing the real work to prevent crimes (including terrorism).

In addition, it distracts from the real clues that may be out there. I used to work retail. We were always told to watch black customers more closely because statistics showed they shoplifted more often. I ignored this advice. I caught more white shoplifters than blacks, but in each case, management or security decided for various reasons to not press charges or even apprehend the white shoplifters. Several other managers caught an equal number of black shoplifters because that's who they were watching. Each of these shoplifters were prosecuted. So our contribution to shoplifting statistics indicated that 100% of shoplifters were black, when in reality one manager who ignored racial profiling caught as many white shoplifters as four other managers who followed racial profiling.

What if all of us had kept our eyes open instead of following racial profiling? We didn't put a dent in stock disappearing. Not even a dent. It was walking out the door daily, costing us hundreds a week. Why? Because the people stealing it weren't black, or teens, or any other stereotype, so no one was watching them. We weren't protecting our stock, we were just putting people in jail based on race. Nothing more.

That's all racial profiling does. It props up racist statistics and racist attitudes, and it serves as a substitute for white supremacist groups for those too chicken to actually join one. But it doesn't stop crime. It just makes it easier on criminals who don't fit the stereotype.

". . . Two UNC students head to Israel to study factors fueling terrorism

Two UNC students have been selected as fellows by the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD).

Jillian Bandes, a junior from Palm Harbor, Fla., and David Dubin, a sophomore from Charlotte, will travel to Tel Aviv, Israel, from July 30 to Aug. 14 to learn about factors that fuel terrorism. During the trip, fellows will hear lectures from diplomats and military officials from India, Jordan, Turkey and the United States.

The students also will travel to Washington, D.C., in January to learn about U.S. involvement in the war on terror. . . The foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank based in Washington, D.C., seeks to educate Americans on the threat of terrorism to democracies worldwide. The staff analyzes global terrorist threats, exploring historical, cultural, philosophical and ideological factors that drive terrorism and can threaten the individual freedoms characteristic of democratic societies.
