WASHINGTON -- An odd couple met at a St. Patrick Day's party in Chicago in 1983.

Iranian exile Habib Moallem wanted the tyrannical Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini driven from power, and he wanted the Soviet Union to stay out of his homeland.

They formed an import-export business that was more about recruiting spies in Iran and elsewhere than about making money. They even hired a Washington-savvy retired Army colonel, who introduced them to America's top intelligence officials.
