135 reasons to vote no

EXAMINATION OF the 135 candidates for governor only underscores the importance of voting "no" on the recall of Gov. Gray Davis. None of the replacement candidates has shown us the attributes necessary to guide the nation's largest state.
At least one factor for the sorry field is the structure of the recall. The absurdly low threshold - 65 signatures and a $3,500 filing fee - makes it too easy for clearly unqualified candidates driven by whim, vanity or hucksterism to clog the ballot. Smut king Larry Flynt, actor Gary Coleman and porn star Mary Carey are the most prominent examples.
Yet even in the field's "top tier,'' at least as defined by the polls, each contender has serious deficiencies.
