USA = "Dinosaur in a Tar Pit"--this ROCKS
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 10:58 AM by mistertrickster
Really interesting Maureen Farrell article (sorry if dupe--I searched it). She has quotes of Swartzkopf, GHW Bush, and even POWELL talking about the futility and stupidity of an invasion of Iraq.

<http://www.buzzflash.com/farrell/03/07/08.html>

"From the brief time that we did spend occupying Iraqi territory after the war, I am certain that had we taken all of Iraq, we would have been like the dinosaur in the tar pit -- we would still be there, and we, not the United Nations, would be bearing the costs of the occupation. This is a burden I am sure the beleaguered American taxpayer would not have been happy to take on."-- Norman Schwarzkopf, from his 1993 autobiography, It Doesn't Take a Hero

"We should not march into Baghdad. To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day Arab hero. Assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an unwinnable urban guerilla war, it could only plunge that part of the world into ever greater instability." - George H.W. Bush, A World Transformed, 1998

1. What do you say about a man
who won't even listen to advice from his own father?

3. "Dinosaur in the tarpit"
That is an apt description. On their way to extinction, I hope.

<Yet in September, 2002, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Jay Bookman predicted the scenario that's now unraveling. "This war, should it come, is intended to mark the official emergence of the United States as a full-fledged global empire, seizing sole responsibility and authority as planetary policeman," Bookman wrote. "Once that is understood, other mysteries solve themselves. For example, why does the administration seem unconcerned about an exit strategy from Iraq once Saddam is toppled? Because we won't be leaving." >
