Open Letter to Terry Schiavo
Dear Terry,

I've been watching the stories and the world unfolding around you.

It is presumptuous of me to speak -- forgive me. In part, I hope you'll hear, and in part not. I'm writing more to help understand things myself. If you do hear this, from anyone, know that I love you and wish for you peace.

So many people are involved in this decision around you. What does your life mean to you when your mode of expression is unclear?

No one can say. But many feel free to say what your life symbolically means to them.

Given an inter-dependent world, it would seem reasonable, where people depend on one another for the course of thier lives and livelihood.

But then there is this other process which seems to serve only the actors who are showing up in your world. They want this thing for you, continued existence. Others are willing to let you go, as it would seem the body has failed you.

It is no small irony that the people interested in maintaing your body are also the ones who seem to have cornered the market on faith in this country as well. One might think they'd be interested in your joining God's team up there, and fighting for them from the spiritual plane, if they could.

It seems their group politics is more important than the natural decay of your biology at this stage, or your husband's wishes. Lots of people are fighting to keep you alive, Terry.

There is a greater hand at work here, Terri. Perhaps you're here to expose the extreme side of this group. Maybe people won't like them after this. And maybe that's the greater good that might come of your continued existence on this plane.

But even that wouldn't be good enough -- because that still fails to meet the criteria I'd established earlier, of each person being an end unto themselves.

That said, your continued existence, in your private state, is compelling. I don't know what's going on in there, deep inside the recesses of your mind, so intractably far away.

If you can hear whispers, hear this: I love you. In my heart, I give you permission to go at your will. I surrender to the freedom of this power to play out through you, greatful to you for your role.
