Life, death and politics
THESE ARE some of the same politicians who talk so passionately about states' rights, a limited role for government, self-determination and the independence of the judiciary.

Those principles were nowhere in sight when Congress stepped into the Terri Schiavo case Sunday night.

The decision on whether Schiavo's life should be extended by an extraordinary medical effort simply does not belong in the hands of 535 House and Senate members.

It is Schiavo's decision.

Because she is not in a position to express her own wishes, it is up to the courts to weigh carefully the evidence and draw judgment. Florida courts have been wrestling with the case for years and ultimately sided with Schiavo's husband, who argued that she would have wanted the feeding tube removed. On Friday, it was removed, prompting Congress to act over the weekend.
