"Bush seems to want to be the president not of the US but of the world"

Let other nations decide their own fates

By John Nichols
March 10, 2005

LONDON - George Bush seems to want to be the president not of the United States but of the world.

Indeed, since his re-election in November, Bush has made foreign policy - a subject about which he displayed scant interest prior to Sept. 11, 2001 - his primary focus. But, as with anyone who is new to complex subject matter, he has not always been graceful in his embrace of it.

This can lead to embarrassing contradictions, as we saw this week.

The president, appearing at the National Defense University, declared, "Today I have a message for the people of Lebanon: All the world is witnessing your great movement of conscience. Lebanon's future belongs in your hands.".......

2. The Chimp's latest European trip was another disaster
His rude use of first names, his cutting off interpreters, his "God bless you alls" in Schroeder's face despite Schroeder having gone on record saying he didn't believe religion had a place in politics only served to solidify in the minds of Europe and its leaders that Bush has a mental problem, and he needs treatment.

3. Yeah, no kidding
When he's not out and about the world pissing everyone off, he's on his "ranch" in Texas. What a leader this asshole is.

6. It may have been an actual disaster in Europe,
but in this country it was presented as a triumph by the corporate media, and that's all that seems to matter.

7. Americans think Iraq is a triumph
so they are hardly a good judge of what is/isn't "success."

Let them live in their dreamworld. Meanwhile, Singapore just bypassed the US for #1 rank in information technology competitiveness. (the US placed fifth) The world is moving forward. The US is in a tailspin.

10. I'm new...
And I'm trying to get into politics more--lots more after the last election....

How can Bush be 'king' (or God forbid, one of the others!) when he can't run for President again? I mean, there's not REALLY a way he could do that is there? YIPE! I thought we had safeguards against that type of thing.....

13. There is . . . ONE way . . .
He and his brother could acknowledge that voter fraud DID exist in Flah-Duh in 2000, making him officially a one-termer and eligible for re-election in '08.

Talk about

15. This administration can do any damned thing it wants.
Bewsh can stick a baby's head on a Mandoline slicer, garnish his salad with the results, eat it in front of a live audience and his MSM and Politburo would applaud him with genuflecting glee. They can do whatever, whenever. Mind over matter . . . as in "they don't mind, and you don't matter!".

Granted, my example in the last post is a bit far-fetched, but wasn't there a rumor that elections would actually be CANCELLED in 2004 if there was a terrorist attack? What WOULDN'T I put past them?

19. Welcome to DU, donatella. . .
I'm happy to hear you're interested in learning more about politics and the ways of the world.

If I may, DU is a great place to find news and analysis, and a wonderful forum to share your thoughts with other, like-minded individuals. But it is also a place rife with hyperbole and wild, often unfounded conjecture. You'd do well to be quite cautious with what you believe in the coming months as you learn the ropes around here.

Good luck with your new pursuit. Take some time to refresh your memory by re-reading some of our nation's core documents, and make the effort to find some competing voices to balance the influx of new ideas -- check out other news sources and read a variety of opinions. People rarely get flummoxed when they can think for themselves.

22. Here's a question, to get you to think about it a bit:
If Republicans control both houses of Congress, the White house, and have the majority of judges on the appeals circuit and SCOTUS, as well as control of a sufficient number of state legislatures, what can they do regarding the Constitution?

No :tinfoilhat: required; it's just very good organization.

Thanks Journeyman,

8. Anybody else feel like we're living in the pre-Star-Trek era...
...the one darkly referred to in so many episodes? As I recall, the darkness spread out of India and China, right? (Khan, Li Ching) Who would've thunk it would boil up out of the 'good guy' USA? Who can imagine what the peak of these bad old days will look like? Are we going to kill everybody on the planet in learning the lessons of just how utterly destructive "conservatism" can be?

Stay tuned.

25. Wonder when people here in the US will accept this reality?
We've been witnesses to perhaps the most significant and successful, faith-based military campaigns in history.
