Social Security plan hanging by a thread
Posted on Fri, Feb. 18, 2005

DAVID BRODER: SYNDICATED COLUMNIST

Social Security plan hanging by a thread

At this early stage of the game, Social Security reform, President Bush's No. 1 domestic goal, is hanging by a thread. House Republican leaders are reluctant to force members to vote on it unless there is a clear prospect of Senate approval. And the votes to break a filibuster in the Senate are just not there.

Bush has barely begun his campaign to drum up support for allowing younger workers to divert some of their Social Security taxes into private accounts, but already he finds himself paddling upstream. Democratic opposition is nearly unanimous -- and energized -- while House Republicans are nervous about facing White House pressure for such a vote.

/snip/

House Democrats were uncertain the Senate would act, and vice versa, so in the end, neither chamber ever held a floor vote on the measure. That is what George Bush could face this time around.

10. Note that it only works for birth years 1950 and after.
They should have started with 1946 -- the start of the Baby Boom.

12. I sent an E-Mail to Schumer. Hopefully, his staff will modify the..
paramenters, and, give further explanation of the "retirement age", etc.

The (pre-Bush) calculations for me, were much higher than the yearly report that I receive from my employer (USPS)

:-)

16. Probably because
supposedly this new bogus SS program won't affect the people who are now age 55 and over? (I think, but who knows with Bushitler in charge)

the General Discussion Board (I think) just a few days ago and I bookmarked the link. I'll try to see if I can find the post.

8. Yeah, it never helps a cause when only 28 percent of the people...
...believe in it at all.

LOL. The thing is DOA, which is why * is backpedaling furiously to find firmer ground on it somewhere.

But everywhere he steps there's more softness.

He'd have been better off coming right out and saying he wanted to raise the ceiling, and then trying to do that. When it got out that his private accounts would drive up the debt and not really fix the problems...well, that was that.

Oh well. Too bad the Dems didn't latch right onto that, they could have had an effective issue to bring up in '06. Oh well.

But if enough of this kind of stuff comes down the pike, it will start to dawn on folks that this admin is not in their corner.

19. So much for Repug Unity
The house repugs don't have the stones touch the third rail of electoral politics. I doubt even Delay could get the votes needed for this dog. I sure hope he tries though.

21. "Plan"? "Plan"??? There's no "plan"; just an appetite and a pack of lies.
This is just another P.O.S. "opinion" piece by Herr Broder - another squishy apologist for the regime. Look at the propagandistic language: "early stage," "reform." "reluctant," "private accounts," "Democrats were uncertain," etc. All designed to portray legitimacy.
