Mon Ami, le Lieutenant Colonel
US Officers active in Anti-French Covert Propaganda
In early 2003, the Miquelon.org website was opened to inform and educate our readers about the anti-French campaign that had been orchestrated by the American Administration and carried out in the streets by regular everyday you and me type people who decided anything French from vin rouge to pomme frites was offensive.
During these last two years, the Miquelon.org project has been commended and ridiculed, highlighted and disparaged by websites, radio and the press. As well, many readers have expressed their opinions through our feedback forms; needless to say the content of these messages went from praise and support to malicious hate mail.
However, it was the actions of a Lieutenant Colonel, a fellow from the Center For Strategic & International Studies in Washington D.C. that epitomized the kind of vicious hatred one can sometime encounter in this new virtual world.
In December of 2003, a number of emails came from this individual and were responded to in due course and with much attention. However, as exchanges increased, the tone of the incoming messages became more and more virulent. Unsatisfied with our responses, the Lieutenant Colonel gradually moved from email to forwarding hundreds of articles and news items to our email inbox.
We voiced our concern with the “Colonel’s” harassment with him directly, requesting this type of action cease immediately. Our request was met with more emails and more articles accumulating at the rate of 5000 per day on subjects ranging from Anti-Semitism to Dennis Miller.
Sample email: All Frogs and Half-Frogs (Quebecers) think the world revolves around LaFrance! My problem is that I enjoy rubbing Frogs' noses in their own s***! You cannot begin to appreciate how much pleasure I get from seeing you squirm from my sending you this article! (…) If those French vacationers (aka Shark Food) had gone to Israel instead of Egypt, they would still be alive today! Its called Karma for Anti-Semites! - Jan 06, 2004
By January 2004, two members of our team monitoring certain websites, discovered a synchronicity between the email bombings and items being posted on a certain website. We thus discovered that our friend the Lieutenant Colonel had been posting tens of thousands of messages on this board under the pseudonym “French Are Vichy”!
When we confronted our email abuser with this fact, all hell broke loose and we were subjected to a new email bombing campaign during which our accounts were subjected to tens of thousands of emails from this individual.
In the end and thankfully, our tech support fine-tuned our filtering software to deal with this relentless email bombing.
But one fact remained: our friend the Lieutenant Colonel had proven one of our longest held suspicions: Active ranking military officers within the US Forces are engaging in covert disinformation campaigns on the Web hoping to go undetected…
