Campaign of deception used to push patriotic song up charts

By JEANNE ANNE NAUJECK

Staff Writer

Country singer Chely Wright said yesterday she was dismissing the head of her fan club and shutting down a team of volunteers after The Tennessean learned that some of them posed as members of the military or their families to promote her latest song.

Seventeen members of a handpicked team of fans contacted radio stations around the country asking for more airplay for Wright's pro-military ballad, The Bumper of My SUV. It was all part of an organized campaign by leaders of the fan club who encouraged the team to do such things as ''tell 'em your husband is a marine — whatever it takes.''

After Wright learned that The Tennessean intended to publish an article about the campaign in today's newspaper, she issued a statement saying that she had dismissed Chuck Walter, a longtime friend who has headed her fan club since 1996.

Wright said she was ''shocked, saddened and deeply upset by this unethical behavior.'' She said Walter was ''an unpaid volunteer who acted without my knowledge or direction.'

has trickled everywhere.

Unfortunately, Americans prefer to believe falsehoods that reinforce their dysfuntional worldviews. It's basically the same phenomina that psychologists have identified in cults. The only way they "snap" out of it is through some personal trauma (or via "deprogramming).

And, the way things are going, it won't be long until Americans experience a collective trauma, the likes of which they've never seen- though many richly deserve.

3. That Song Is Probably the Most Vapid Drivel
Since Darrell Worley's "Have You Forgotten?"

They are Straw Man songs.

I've got a bright red sticker on the back of my car,
Says: "United States Marines."
An' yesterday a lady in a mini-van,
Held up her middle finger at me.
Does she think she knows what I stand for,
Or the things that I believe?
Just by looking at a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

See, my brother Chris, he's been in,
For more than 14 years now.
Our Dad was in the Navy during Vietnam,
Did his duty, then he got out.
And my Grandpa earned his Purple Heart,
On the beach of Normandy.
That's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

But that doesn't mean that I want war:
I'm not Republican or Democrat.
But I've gone all around this crazy world,
Just to try to better understand.
An' yes, I do have questions:
I get to ask them because I'm free.
That's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

'Cause I've been to Hiroshima,
An' I've been to the DMZ.
I've walked on the sand in Baghdad,
Still don't have all of the answers I need.
But I guess I wanna know where she's been,
Before she judges and gestures to me,
'Cause she don't like my sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

So I hope that lady in her mini-van,
Turns on her radio and hears this from me.
As she picks up her kids,
From their private school,
An' drives home safely on our city streets.
Or to the building where her church group meets:
Yeah, that's why I've got a sticker for the US Marines,
On the bumper of my S.U.V.

Here's my thing... how do you know she was flipping you off for the bumper sticker? Did she tell you?

Because I'd say it's more than a little possible that she was flipping you off for being a stupid fucking moron in general. Maybe you cut her off in traffic. Maybe she just hates your music.

Oh, and while I'm at it... those guys aren't dying so that kids can go to school or people can have church group meetings... they are dying so that you can keep filling up your SUV. Dumb bitch.

7. My father was a WW II combat vet, and when the liars try to connect *'s.
....war in Iraq to the Second World War, I'd love to shove that bumper sticker up these yahoo's behinds, not on the bumper of an SUV!

Once and for all: There is NO connection, Neo-CONS!!!!

Not to 9/11, not to Vietnam, not to Korea, and not to World War II!

Got it ?

-Rant mode off-

8. I was thinking the same thing. . .
Like . . .listen dumbass . . . I'm flipping you off because you drive like a prick and your SUV is the size of a semi. I didn't even look at your craptacular bumper sticker. Hell, I would've flipped you off even if you had a baby on board sticker. It was your general human fuckery that prompted me to flip you off, I could care less about your sticker.

Oh, and even if I had flipped you off because of the bumper sticker, it's becaus I'm ex Army Infantry, and if I didn't like jarheads while I was in the Infantry, what makes you think I like you now? :) :) :)

10. I Think I'm Gonna Record a Response Song
I've got a bright blue sticker on the back of my car
Says: "My Child is an Honor Student at East Parkside Middle School"
An yesterday a country singer in an SUV
Started honking and screaming at me like a fool
I think it's obvious she hates my child
Though there's no evidence that makes that clear
But I've got a bumper sticker
On the back of my Chevy Cavalier

See, when I was in school I went to
Class and I did okay
My sister went to school too
And she graduated
And now my kid gets pretty good grades
At the school here
That's why I have a "My Child is an Honor Student at East Parkside Middle School"
On the bumper of my Chevy Cavalier

Now I know this song doesn't make much sense
And makes a lot of stupid assumptions
In a lot of places the lyrical rhythm is all wrong
And the song doesn't rhyme
But I guess you can sing any damn thing
And the country music stations will air it
So now I'll close this song with a question I'm asking
Like a mentally challenged parrot
"Why does that woman hate my child just because he got good grades because he studies a lot and does his homework and so now he's an honor student at East Parkside Middle School just like it says
On the sticker on the bumper of my Chevy Cavalier?"

Okay, who thinks I've got a future in Nashville now?

5. As one who sent a son to Iraq
and as a musician, I would say that this is pretty lowdown.

Stay out of the music machine. It'll chew up your soul....

13. Only After Being Exposed
"After Wright learned that The Tennessean intended to publish an article about the campaign in today's newspaper, she issued a statement saying that she had dismissed Chuck Walter."

Another fraud who decides to do the right thing after the whole world is laughing and pointing at her.

I'm not impressed.
