Article claims Iran war is in the works

Graham Pitts
Staff Wrier

In this week's New Yorker magazine, Seymour Hersh published a story detailing, according to Hersh's anonymous sources, the Administration's firm plans for an attack on Iran. He cites former intelligence officers who accuse Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld of plotting to move Special Forces operations under Pentagon control and away from the CIA. This, Hersh's sources charge, is designed to avoid Congressional oversight during the buildup towards an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities and for other operations in the 'war on terrorism' that might raise eyebrows in the House and Senate.

"The Administration has been conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran at least since last summer," said Hersh, in what could prove to be a startling revelation. "Much of the focus is on the accumulation of intelligence and targeting information on Iranian nuclear, chemical, and missile sites, both declared and suspected. The goal is to identify and isolate three dozen, and perhaps more, such targets that could be destroyed by precision strikes and short-term commando raids."

<snip>

"There is plausible deniability -of course they don't want it known...But it's very simple, this administration has won a new election, and the President is pretty clear about what he says -he has a mandate to carry out, to democratise the Middle East, and Iran is next," Hersh told the BBC.

1. So what different approaches will admin take to make this happen?
Can't pull it off quite the same way as Iraq? Are there more or less sheep now then two-three years ago in American public/U.S. government/Europe?

6. I can't imagine
I can't imagine the public being sucked in again!!! But, I fear...they are easy prey. What about our Reps in Washington. Will they so easily be 'led' again? When will this insanity end? As I look around, I can barely recognize my own country!!

15. condi said no attack was in the plans and THEN said
the people of Iran need to be free to determine their own destiny.

I smell a new "freedom" campaign coming, and soon. After all - Iraq is now a "democracy", about as far along as the Afghani's were when we abandoned them to free Iraq, eh?

move along, nothing to see there - freedom is on the march again.

:puke:

5. That would not surprise me
From a military point of view I suppose it makes sense that the next target should be the most influential country in the Middle East. And they do have Iran between a hammer and anvil with forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Any megalomaniac worth his salt could not resist this one; the conquest of a whole region and the capture of vital resources.
I guess we will see just how much a madman we have running things.

8. i feel that invading iran would be
a fool's idea. obvious, of course, but you've got to look at it in terms of political stability: bush is gonna stir up a hornet's nest of religion here...iran isn't a semi-secular country that just happens to have muslims in it, it's the backbone of the muslim (particularly shia) religion. if he goes after iran, we'll see a hundred times the "terrorism" done by iraqis in their home country, or saudis/mossad agents in our own...

plus there's the military consideration: barring a draft, we haven't got a tenth of the troops needed to conquer iran. their army is powerful and well-disciplined; despite the older soviet technology, their chances of holding us off are far greater. they have f-14's, and other modern warplanes...

we'd be going into the lion's den there. (funny how that seems to fit iran, (formerly persia).

i expect that if we go in, that half our troops won't come back out again except in body bags...it could be the worst military defeat in american history.

thus, the only way to prevent this defeat is to prevent the invasion. simple as that.

11. The vandal in the WH
isn't interested in doing ANYTHING well. For him, lobbing a few hundred cruise missles into Iran, w/o any follow-up on the ground would be par for the course. Half-assed? Of course. Dangerous; because we DON'T know what their nuclear capability is? Naturally. But he/she/it hasn't exactly set the world on fire with it's judicious foresight. What else would you expect from this dumb-assed, psychopathic piece of shit?

The thing that surprises me is that Israel is likely to get hit hard, IF they have the ability to retaliate. I'm betting they do. Israel, however, seems to be beating the drums of preemptive attack on Iran as much as the chimp. Do they have a national death-wish? Possibly.

12. israel WANTS a reason to shoot back with THEIR nukes.
they're begging for it. they want a reason to bomb the hell out of the muslims, bc of a problem that's not quite 70 years old. i'm not an antisemite, or a "jewbasher" or whatever...but i think our backing the jews in creating israel after ww2 was politically a very bad idea. VERY bad. it opened us up to all of these problems now.

if there wasn't ONE country there that was judaic compared to the rest of the islamic countries, we wouldn't have had the wars in the 70's, or the problems we're having now...

16. I personally think it is a bluff
But a bluff with a backup.
The talk is all to let Iran know that we want to and if we can we can shock and aw them into giving up and do what we want.
In any case it shows just how devious and controlling this administration is, but then it is in their advantage (in there own mind)to be thought of as a bad ass if you want to control the playground.

17. when has bush ever bluffed?
even to strike somewhere else? he's always said it out loud, what he's gonna do and how he's gonna destroy whatever he's gone after. now he never just said "i'm gonna attack iraq for no reason", he's always tried to build a reason...but he's always announced his intentions.

"God Is With Us": Hitler's Rhetoric and the Lure of "Moral Values"

by Maureen Farrell
"God does not make cowardly nations free." -- Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf

A couple weeks ago, while asserting that the Founding Founders intended for the U.S. government to be infused with Christianity, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said that the Holocaust was able to flourish in Germany because of Europe's secular ways. "Did it turn out that, by reason of the separation of church and state, the Jews were safer in Europe than they were in the United States of America?" Scalia asked a congregation at Manhattan's Shearith Israel synagogue. "I don't think so."

One might expect regular citizens to be ignorant of history, but a Supreme Court Justice? Does he imagine that the phrase "Gott mit Uns" was a German clothier's interpretation of "Got Milk"?

10. This appears to be about the Seymour Hersh New Yorker article
that was published online on Jan 17, not a newer report. Here's a thread linking to the full text version of Hersh's article -- which is a MUST-READ for all of us -- and to several threads of discussion and a video of a Hersh interview about it.:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=2962328

Very, very scary stuff. The article is not only about the secret military targeting missions inside Iran, it also is about the "hollowing out" of the CIA to continue the consolidation of intelligence-gathering activites under the DOD where there is no oversight and the neocon civilians can control access as well as decide objectives.

As I said, all of us should read and consider the implications of this Seymour Hersh New Yorker article. Everything coming out of the blivet** cartel needs to be considered in light of what Hersh reveals. His info comes from government insiders who are desperate to get the word out so that this march to destruction can be stopped in time.

13. Honest to God, I hope we get our asses kicked.
And I mean, so badly that there's no WAY it can't be shown on the news media. It's not that I of course want any harm done, but these megalomaniacs only understand one thing -- death and destruction -- and apparently we haven't had "enough" of that in Afghanistan and Iraq. What will it take for the sheeple to wake up and start down Pa. Ave. with the pitchforks and torches?
