Al Jazeera 'for sale' is a sad sign for all

By Linda S. Heard

Al-Jazeerah, February 2, 2005

The day that Al Jazeera is closed down or sold off will be a sad one.

In the way that Rupert Murdoch's "fair and balanced" Fox News reflects the views of conservative right-wingers portraying American soldiers in Iraq as cuddly do-gooders, Al Jazeera doesn't shrink from showing the results of their handiwork.

(gee, maybe murdoch will buy it and make it fair and balanced!)

1. This is unfortunate.
I recommend that all Duers see the documentary "Control Room." It really gives a look into what the American media has done during this war and the news that Al-Jazeerah was trying to make known.

7. someone will buy it or keep it afloat period
it is clearly a very effective voice of dissent that has no qualms about exposing stories the "sanitized" western media won't touch.

It is a media machinery with, never before believed possible, credibility in the middle east.

The BBC has been operational for decades without advertisers, 10 million viewers ponying up $5 a piece will keep it solvent so someone will find a way to keep it going.

3. I have a feeling Time-Warner will buy it.
The first time I ever heard of Al J. was on CNN and I wondered why they were promoting a competittor, and then I thought, because they're probably going to buy it if it succeeds.

Al Jazeera For Sale?
This morning at 1:35 AM, the FOX News webcrawl announced that the government of Qatar - buckling to pressure from the Bush administration - has agreed to sell Al Jazeera to a private company. The crawl went on to say that the Bush administration doubts that private ownership of the station will improve the station's anti-American bias. Raise your hand if you think Rupert Murdoch will make a bid for it!!

(looks like it's real...)

6. I couldn't imagine
any large media company buying AJ. Too much stigma attached. I enjoy reading it now and then.

9. It needs to be privatized...
Privatization means freedom. Freedom means democracy. Democracy means fair and balanced fashism.
I love the free market and pray to the freedom market every single minute I don't sleep, work or watch Fox-TV.

I wanna be like you,

Hello from Germany,
Dirk
