Georgia School Chief Turns Herself In
More Republican "values".

ATLANTA - Georgia's former schools superintendent surrendered to a federal magistrate Monday on charges she stole more than $600,000 in education funds and spent it on plastic surgery and her failed campaign for governor.

---

A grand jury handed down an indictment last week accusing Schrenko, 54, of stealing federal education funds intended to buy computers for students.

The government is seeking the return of at least $614,387.

Acting U.S. Attorney Sally Yates says nearly half the money went to Schrenko's failed bid for the Republican nomination for governor in 2002. The indictment says Schrenko spent more than $9,000 on cosmetic surgery.

4. Actually stealing public money is a repuke value
I'm sure she feels she felt justified since she was doing God's work. Notice that she's pleading not guilty. Another repuke value - never admit you're wrong and never take responsibility.

6. Failed republican bid for governor? There must be some mistake....
....God fearing, Christian republicans are never accused of stealing public funds. They are never supposed to get caught! The U.S. Attorney, Sally Yates is obviously a godless, atheist, liberal, pink-communist filing totally baseless charges. Besides, if a republican ever got their hands on $614,387.00 tax free, that kind of money would have been laundered and hidden away in off-shore secret accounts. This is a totally trumped up set of charges and will be thrown out of court by a Christian conservative federal judge before it ever gets into the records. Move-on please!

30. About three feet from where I was sitting on Saturday
...at a county Democrats breakfast meeting, I got to hear GA's former governor Roy Barnes refer to this woman as "a nut." The phrase he used, IIRC, was, "I'm glad everyone can see what a nut I had to deal with," when she was his Sec'y of Eddication.

This was the same woman who discouraged parents from joining the PTA because it's a "liberal organization."

Come to think of it, she's the reason I voted in the Republican primary in 2002. I was so worried about her securing the party's nomination and, potentially, becoming governor of the state that it was worth it to cast a vote against her (and for Sonny Perdue, god help me.)

40. Georgia has such bad luck with the State School Superintendents.
Schrenko defeated Werner Rogers. Werner Rogers was a total hack. He new nothing of running an effective organization - just ballooning its size to the point of gross rediculousness and busting budgets. Then we have Cathy Cox who capitulated to the fundies with the policy feint of teaching evolution as just an imperfect alternative to Christian creationism.

Is it any wonder why Georgia's school officials look at the results of standardized tests and shake their heads?

Actually, it was her support for teaching creationism in Georgia's public schools that turned me against her.

Also, she hired her pastor and his wife once she took over the state department of education!

12. horrible person
i believe she also borrowed huge sums w/her daughter's dentistry practice as collateral for her campaign.

bent over backwards to appease fundies & home-school nutjobs whilst in office as head of GA education.

she was so unpopular, even w/GOP, that she may well do some fed time over this. very "soft" time, o/c, if she pleads.

17. Adjustment needed to her medication!
As a Georgia resident, I can tell you Schrenko went down hill
quickly after taking office. It seems that almost everyone in
the state noticed her strangeness and ineptness before she
ran for governor in 2002. She was an early favorite in polls
for the governors race, but eventually disappeared off the campaign
trail and was never a factor in the race. Yesterday's Atlanta Journal quoted someone in the know and they said she became bedridden due to an old injury or medical condition, and could not campaign any longer. Wonder if she is on pain killing medication.

Whatever it is I hope she gets her just desserts for ripping off
taxpayers. Maybe the prison guards will be impressed by her face lift.

22. UPDATE: She Enters Not-Guilty Plea ....BWHAAAAA
Schrenko did not speak to reporters and said little during the hearing, except to tell the federal magistrate that she is taking medication for injuries from a car accident. She said it would not interfere with her ability to understand the proceedings.

A grand jury handed down the indictment against Schrenko, 54, last week, and the government is seeking the return of at least $614,387.

Acting U.S. Attorney Sally Yates says nearly half the money went to Schrenko's failed bid for the Republican nomination for governor in 2002. The indictment says Schrenko spent more than $9,000 on cosmetic surgery.

Two of her former associates were also indicted. Appearing with Schrenko at Monday's hearing was Stephan Botes, who also pleaded innocent Monday. Schrenko's former deputy superintendent, Merle Temple Jr., also is indicted and was to appear at a later hearing.
