Post staff report
Election officials in Hamilton and Butler counties are working long hours to determine the validity of thousands of provisional ballots cast in the Nov. 2 election.
"Our staff has been working 12 hours a day, six days a week," said Tim Burke, chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Elections.
"We've hired extra staffers because it takes an incredible amount of time to check provisional ballots."
Provisional ballots were cast by voters whose names didn't appear on the registration books of the precinct in which they voted. Such votes are considered provisional and not counted until it can be verified that voters were qualified to cast ballots in those precincts.
About 13,000 provisional ballots were cast in Hamilton County and nearly 6,000 in Butler County. Burke said Hamilton County officials initially thought they had about 15,000 provisional ballots to process.
