Partisans on both sides of the issue blame the news media, Congress, unknown political hackers or some combination of all three for either ignoring the charges or giving them the slightest credence.
New Paltz Mayor and Green Party member Jason West has been joined by presidential candidate Ralph Nader in calling for an impartial investigation into what he and others believe might be large-scale vote fraud.
West is concerned with the absence of "paper trails" in some electronic voting machines. In other cases, he believes the paper trail that does exist might have been tampered with electronically.
"Why is it that for the first time anyone can remember, exit poll data didn't line up with what eventually happened? And yet no one in Congress is lifting a finger to investigate," West said last week.
