Penn Hills studying Santorum residency issue (New Report)

This house at 111 Stephens Lane in Penn Hills is owned by U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04319/411623.stm

The Penn Hills School District, which is paying about $38,000 a year for five of U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's children to attend a cyber charter school, is looking into whether the Republican senator resides in the district.

School board member Erin Vecchio, who is chair of the Democratic party in Penn Hills and lives near a two-bedroom house owned by the Santorums, said, "I live right down the street from the man. He's never there. ... He doesn't live here."

She thinks the district shouldn't have to pay for the Santorum children to attend the Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School. It is based in Midland but serves more than 3,100 pupils from nearly 400 school districts statewide who attend via computer.

Under state law, the district in which the pupil resides must pay for each resident who attends a charter school. While the fee varies by district, Penn Hills must pay $7,551 for each pupil.

<snip>

The Santorums use the Penn Hills address for voter registration as do two other people, Bart and Alyssa DeLuca, both 25, according to Allegheny County records.

1. Geez, 10 people claim residency here
in a two bedroom house...them republicans sure like it cozy, don't they? Let's see, one bedroom for the asswipe and his wife, the other bedroom for the other 6 kids and two adults, and a few assorted box-turtles thrown in for good measure...

44. Senator's school bills unfair burden (Carlisle PA)
<snip> Santorum may be our senator, but Virginia wins hands down when it comes to collecting his taxes. And his new resident state doesn't even have to school his children.

Virginia schools don't pay for cyberschooling. Pennsylvania schools do.

So, Santorum signs his children up as Penn Hills students even though they're not there. And Penn Hills gets to pay cyberschool tuition at the rate of $7,000 a year for each child. That must more than make up for the taxes paid on his little $106,000 house in this state. <snip>

We'd say children should be enrolled where they live. These children obviously are not living in Penn Hills. Home base is Leesburg. <snip>

i have contacted the local DFA group in the hopes of organizing a sign campaign. unfortunately, i have no resources but a lot of ideas, including a web site, bumper stickers, letter writing, and...

erecting 4'X 8' signs in high visibility locations in communities around allegheny county saying something like -

SENATOR SANTORUM
DON'T MOVE HERE
WE CAN'T AFFORD YOU

we need to act now. we can't wait until 2006 to start our campaign against santorum. the santorum apologists have already begun writing their letters. we must strike while the iron is hot!

6. The Internets can be used to post all rethug bad behavior - transparency
should be the rule. If they know their hypocrisy is going to be publicized and they can't hide in the dark at the public's expense, they'll be less likely to screw the taxpayers.

4. Have neighbors/local dems organize "Santorum Watch"
You know, counting the days: Have a big sign with a daily count:
Day Three. . . . . .Day 38 . . . . Day 190, etc., No Santorum children
residing in Penn Hills.

He'll probably quietly sell THAT house, and pick up a cheap apartment rental in an uber Republican area where no one would dare hassle him. Of course, the Republican suburbs around Pittsburgh have top drawer and VERY expensive school systems, and the high property taxes to support them, so maybe he'll move to some rural hamlet in the center of the state, where the school district is dirt poor, and taxes are very cheap but the low income locals are stupid enough to keep voting Republican because bygod, their parents and grandparents voted that way.

It would also be of interest to establish that the Santorums are not members of any of the three (I think there are three) Catholic churches in Penn Hills. I bet Santorum's Opus Dei (quasi-secret , by invitation only, Catholic extremist/elitist society) has its own very special Sunday services in the DC/northern Virginia area.

5. The ReThugs have gone from
bragging they have a "Big Tent" to denying they have a little house.

See the other thread in Editorials and other Articles. It has been going for two days.

1. A definite Dem policy should be to expose ReThug hypocrisy as much as possible.

Having two families registered to vote in one small house should be criminal, shouldn't it? Some sort of fraud?

2. We should also keep this brewing civil war between Specter and the Rightists in the news as much as possible. Perhaps tap on that wedge a few times, as well...

18. god, I hope the PA press nails him to the fuckin' wall on this.
I think he should be Target #1 in 2006. If he were named VP on the GOP's ticket, it would give them an opening in 2008 to PA's electoral votes. But if he goes out of office in a scandal-ridden disgrace, his name get scratched-off the list before considerations even begin.

How is the PA media treating this? Is it on local news every night, or is this largely a newspaper-confined story thus far?

25. Uh oh - Penn hills house has no occupancy permit.
"Bob Hunter, Penn Hills director of code enforcement, said the Santorum house lacks a required occupancy permit, which calls for a municipal inspection for any code violations and a dye test of the sewer system. Hunter has sent a letter asking them to seek an occupancy permit."

So Santorum is claiming as his residence a house he rents out to someone else and the house doesn't even have an occupancy permit? How many laws is this guy breaking, anyway?

36. Actually the local school tax bill is separate from the County tax
Another report had him paying $2000 to the school district. I figure in total he pays around $3000 a year in property taxes.

I don't know about Penn Hills but in McKeesport I pay school and local property tax to McKeesport and County real estate tax to Allegheny county.

in the house race? One of the smears Santorum put on him was that Walgren owned a home in Virginia, kept his family there, and sent his children to school there.

This looks like Santorum does exactly the same and tries to make it appear he doesn't.

If Daschle can lose, Santorum can lose.

43. Yes I do remember.... why it was 1990 and little Ricky was mad that ...
Democratic Congressman Doug Walgren lived in Virginia and he didn't. So he told his neighbors that if he represented them he would live in Pennsylvania. Oh how little Ricky lies. But the people believed him and elected him their representative. It wasn't long before little Ricky was finally able to move to Virginia just like Mr. Walgren. But little Ricky didn't forget the people of Pennsylvania. Oh my no, he would never forget the people of Pennsylvania. So he left them something to remember him by - his children's school tax bill. And little Ricky lived happily ever after...in Virginia. The End.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ACTUAL QUOTES OF 1990 CAMPAIGN FROM EITHER SANTORUM OR HIS CAMPAIGN ADS SHOWING THIS HYPOCRISY???
(it was in 1990 ... pre-internets)

11/16/04 - Rooney Demands Refund For Santorum's Cyber School Costs

PA Dem Chair Says Santorum “Robbing Pennsylvania Students” for Personal Gain

HARRISBURG, PA: After days of news reports detailing how Senator Rick Santorum has taken $100,000 in Pennsylvania taxpayer dollars for cyber-schooling his children, Rep. T.J. Rooney, Chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, today called on Santorum to refund Pennsylvania's children the taxpayer dollars he has taken from their education to put towards the education of his own children.

Santorum and his family live in Virginia.

Rooney said today, “Senator Santorum keeps going around trumpeting family values, trying to convince citizens that he is the voice for the Pennsylvania family. Now we learn that apparently Mr. Santorum believes that family values means taking from the children who need our help to pay huge bills for his own family, even though they don't live in Pennsylvania.”

According to the Associated Press, the Penn Hills School District in suburban Pittsburgh has spent $100,000 on the Internet-based education of Santorum's children since 2001-2002. Santorum purchased his two bedroom residence in the school district in 1997 for $87,800. His Leesburg, Virginia home was assessed at $757,000 this year.

“This is a classic case of the rich man's Robin Hood,” Rooney followed. “Mr. Santorum makes a generous salary and lives in a very expensive home in Virginia, but he didn't let that stop him from unfairly taking from the Pennsylvania students who need those school funds desperately.”
