GOP denies Whitmire use of Capitol site

AUSTIN -- State Sen. John Whitmire plans to hold a news conference today in a Senate room he is barred from using until he pays $57,000 in fines levied against him by Republican senators.

Whitmire, D-Houston, broke ranks with fellow Democratic senators earlier this week by announcing he was quitting a Senate boycott. He said he would return to Austin from Albuquerque, N.M., in an effort to negotiate a deal to end a stalemate in the congressional redistricting battle with Republicans.

Whitmire's staff announced the news conference without booking the Lieutenant Governor's Press Conference Room.

But Senate spokesman Mark Miner said that unless he pays his fines, Whitmire will be told he cannot use the room when he shows up
"The press conference room is not available," Miner said.

2. And there you have it...
There is no "bipartisanship" with these people. They cannot and should not be compromised with, appeased, negotiated with or placated. They must be defeated. Whitmire seems to be a little late in realizing that. In fact, I am inclined to say that all that money raised by moveon.org should bypass Whitmire. Let him pay his own fines and expenses. It may well be because of him that we have 5 new Bushbots in the House next year and my city will be obliterared into 4 pieces.

5. Hear! Here!
Exactly right! He made the decision to come back to his ol' buddies (his law firm does lots of work for Pubs) and I do think he's probably just a little shocked right now.

He's got $57,000 surely! And some careful cleansing around that rectal area ought to make everything look pretty much like before.

Because of him, the center of my district will move from my town to a large city 300 miles away.

Nice goin' Whatmuck!

6. Maybe, but ...
We Dems currently have 8-10 committee chairs, it looks like those are gone and unless there is a major reshuffling of Senate composition in the 2004 elections the 2005 legislative session will totally shut out any Democrat voice.

7. House Dems currently have 0 committee chairs...
and this will remain as such for the rest of the decade, if not longer, if the redistricting plan passes (barring a wave, of course).

If Whitmore provides a quorum and redistricting passes, I shall brand him a DINO now and forevermore.

Happily, redistricting may not pass even with a quorum...the House and Senate still can't agree on the new lines.

3. Until we meet this kind of brute force with the same kind of force
only then will be able to get back to some kind of mutual respect and good public policy.

8. Did you get the picture, John?
You understand what's at stake, but do you really get just what sort of methods and tactics are being used against you and your party? It's up to you to figure out what the greater obligation is: Representing all the people of the State of Texas, or getting along with the power-mad swine currently in control in Austin.
