Two relatives of Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi have been kidnapped, his office said yesterday, but a previously unknown Islamic group claimed to have seized three and said it would behead them in 48 hours if all prisoners in Iraq were not released and the assault on Fallujah not halted.
The apparent death threat came on the second full day of a US-led assault on Falluja, and as US marines said they expected to have taken control of the city within 48 hours.
Mr Allawi's office confirmed that his cousin, Ghazi Allawi, 75, and Ghazi's unnamed daughter-in-law had been abducted, but would not confirm or deny a report that his wife had also been abducted.

A source from the Premier's Iraqi National Accord (INA) party said earlier that Ghazi Allawi's wife was also abducted. Asked why no reference was made to her, an official from the Prime Minister's office said nothing was being denied.
