Bringing democracy to Iraq. One bomb at a time </sarcasm>
WASHINGTON — The U.S.-led assault on Fallujah is the first of what promises to be a series of military operations to secure towns and cities where insurgents could disrupt upcoming elections and sow chaos throughout Iraq.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld declined Monday to talk about where and when U.S. and Iraqi troops might strike next. But he acknowledged that Fallujah was not a climactic or final showdown with insurgent forces.
"It's going to be going on for a period ahead," Rumsfeld said of efforts to take the fight to the guerrillas with Iraq's national elections 21/2 months away. But "even if we were planning to go" to other Iraqi cities, he told reporters, "we wouldn't talk about it."
