NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tribune Co.'s Newsday newspaper, which got a new publisher in July after a circulation scandal, on Tuesday replaced its top editor, Howard Schneider, who was in the job for about a year.
The Melville, New York-based daily named John Mancini, who has overseen its New York City edition, as editor, effective Wednesday, according to a memo to employees from publisher Tim Knight that was provided to Reuters.
Knight said in the memo it had become apparent that he and Schneider had "basic differences in how best to position Newsday for the future." Schneider had worked for the paper for 35 years.
The announcement came as Newsday faces pressure to cut costs following revelations it improperly overstated circulation data used to set rates for advertisers. Tribune has set aside $90 million to compensate advertisers who were overcharged at Newsday as well as at Spanish-language daily Hoy.
