WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Tourists visiting the U.S. capital who hope to get a glimpse of the White House can now get a much closer view after the government on Tuesday reopened the main avenue in front of the building to pedestrians.
After an 11-month construction project to refurbish the section of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House, the government took down the chain-linked fences that had cordoned off the road and neighboring Lafayette Park.
Because of security concerns, the area has been closed to cars and trucks for years. There are no immediate plans to allow vehicles but a brochure touting the renovations said the bollards were designed to be removable "should the security environment change."
