About 400 to lose jobs as Nokia leaves Melbourne (Florida)
http://www.floridatoday.com/topstories/110804nokia.htm

Nokia plans to shut down its Melbourne cellular-phone refurbishing plant by September 2005, eliminating 400 local jobs in the process.

The company - which has been in Brevard County since 1991 and is now one of the county's larger employers - announced its plans to workers today. Layoffs will begin immediately at the plant, near Melbourne International Airport.

The layoffs will affect a spectrum of employees, from entry-level manufacturing workers making $8 an hour to manufacturing managers earning in the $50,000- to $60,000-a-year range.

The cellular-telephone manufacturer said the number of phones coming into the Melbourne facility for repairs didn't warrant keeping the operation going. The company attributed that to the quality of Nokia phones, but outside analysts say the ever-changing cell-phone technology made refurbishing of phones less popular and less cost-effective.

Nokia workers were told today that layoffs would begin immediately and continue through the third quarter of 2005, said Mary Graves, a spokeswoman for Nokia's North America operations, which is based in Dallas.

Layoffs announced since Nov 3, 2004: 38,760

4. Perfect timing
My wife is in Florida for about a week, to be with her dad during heart surgery. She was dreading the trip, because her parents voted Bush. Her mother's argument was "My brother was in WWII and HE never bragged about his military service!" He also died thirty years ago, so didn't get much chance to, but I digress. Some of you may recall that I sent a rather impassioned e-mail to my mother-in-law prior to the election, about how important this race was and that she look at the much bigger picture, and think of her grandson's and daughter getting drafted, etc. I got a very terse letter back telling me never to send her anything political again, and that she's still try to consider me good son-in-law. Sheesh...like I'd be a bad one for trying to protect her daughter and grandkids?

Anyway, my wife is there (we're from Cocoa Beach) and Melbourne is home to many close friends. This news will hit while she's there, and will give ample opportunity to drive home one of the points I was making, not that it will do any good at this point...unless they keep on counting!

9. Nokia is a Finnish Company...
Maybe the people of Finland are demanding that companies like Nokia stop "outsourcing" jobs to other countries, like the United states?

You really can't blame them.
I've been complaining about "outsourcing" for months.
Good for them.

11. Loudly and proudly....
...This has been one of my most pressing issues of the campaign.

My complaints were made via my contributions to the DNC, John Kerry, and several other organizations.
When debating my coworkers, I make my feelings well known.
When I marched in NYC against the RNC, I made my voice known.

How about you?
