Man Kills Self at Ground Zero
Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 09:35 PM by Snellius
NEW YORK — A 25-year-old university worker from Georgia shot and killed himself at ground zero (search) Saturday morning, authorities said.

The man, Andrew Veal (search), of Athens, Ga., was found atop the structure housing the 1 and 9 subway lines after a hotel worker spotted what he believed was somebody sleeping inside the site around 8 a.m., said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found near the body, Coleman said. No suicide note was found, he said.

Veal apparently was distraught over President Bush's (search) re-election, Newsday reported Saturday on its Web site edition, citing an unnamed police source. The newspaper also said the man was a registered Democrat who opposed the war in Iraq.

"Republicans and conservatives can best advance the cause of civility by working hard to finish off the hopes of the Democrats for any return to power. 31. Grover Shmover
Democrats and progressives can best advance the cause of civility by working hard to finish off the hopes of the Republicans for any chance of getting anything done, especially after the midterm elections of '06. It is like the processing of barnyard animals: they are much calmer, less likely to cause damage, and easier to control once they are shrink-wrapped and placed in the meat cooler. As the guy at the deli counter says, "They will be happier; and they fill a good sandwich plus potato salad and pickle, all for just $3.25

44. Sometimes it draws attention to a problem that nothing
else can do quite as well. For instance, look at the self-immolations of the Buddhist monks in Vietnam to protest the war. Worldwide attention that was not forgotten, and part of the pressure that produced the Paris peace talks.

During the WTO (I think) talks in Cancun a few years ago, a farmer climbed up on a fence outside the talks and shot himself to draw attention to the failures of the talks to address the concerns of farmers. Still remembered.

Was that Andrew Veal's intention? The Port Authority reported no suicide note.

Why?
Because the earliest the Dems can take back congress is Nov 2006 and the new congress won't be seated until 07. And as we saw with Bill Clinton you don't need a reason to impeach a president just the ability (i.e. a majority in the house.)

Deliberately misleading the American People about the reasons for invading another country is a good reason for impeachment in my book.

32. Indeed
given that 41% of registered voters voted "none of the above" and 25% of Chimp voters thought about voting for Kerry it is entirely possible that we can take Congress in 2 years. If Bush is half as bad as we expect him to be there will be millions of Americans banging their heads against the wall & screaming "why did I vote for that fool?" in time for the 2006 elections.

68. I think EVERYONE SHOULD RESPECTFULLY LINE THE ROUTE
...and in their pocket, have a small square of sticky electric tape.

As the Chimp's car approaches, put the sticky square of black tape directly under the nose, raise the right arm in a Nazi salute, and shout SIEG HEIL! SIEG HEIL!

The best thing about this sort of protest is that there ain't NO way you can see what people will be doing, until it is done. Get enough people out there--thousands would be fabulous--and it would make some serious news. Everyday, average people, wearing everyday clothes, no obvious signage...just a square of black tape, kept in the pocket or taped to the back of a lapel until the right moment. Grandmas, grampas, little kids, Nazi saluting that little Nazi...it would send a strong signal to the rest of the world that we all haven't overdosed on Kool-Aid.

30. Re: Fox... Brit Hume's son killed himself. I hope they aren't chuckling
just FYI

Monday, February 23, 1998; 8:27 p.m. EST

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Monday mourned the death of Sandy Hume, a rising young Capitol Hill reporter and son of prominent Fox News broadcaster Brit Hume.

Hume, 28, a reporter for The Hill newspaper, committed suicide Sunday night, said Martin Tolchin, publisher and editor in chief of the paper.

Hume died in his Arlington, Va., apartment Sunday night, said Tolchin. ``You can imagine, we're all absolutely crushed by this,'' Tolchin said. ``We're devastated.'' Arlington police officials didn't immediately return telephone messages Monday concerning Hume's death.

Hume worked for two years on The Hill, and broke the story about last summer's attempted revolt in the Republican leadership against Gingrich, R-Ga.

51. BARBECUE CIRCLE IN SAIGON (slang GI term forTrung Minh Ky)

On the morning of June 11, 1963, a startling spectacle of protest occurred in downtown Saigon.
Buddhist militants blocked off a busy intersection as an elderly monk sat in the middle of the
street. Thich Quang Duc did not so much as blink as compatriots drenched him in gasoline. The
robed man sat unflinching in a meditative posture even when a supporter set him alight. Quang
Duc burned quickly in orange flame and fell over dead before an ambulance or fire-truck could
reach him. Only his heart remained, which was recovered and later enshrined. Spectators included
pedestrians and foreign correspondents who had been alerted and directed to the scene by
organizers. The incident shocked everyone in attendance.

60. i understand why you have to
say that-
but to some, 4 years (more) is too much to endure-
hope is the thing with feathers
that pearches in the soul

andthis country is flying with a broken wing-
i understand his action

i trust he's at last at peace-

he wasn't the first, and he won't be the last.
There IS a fate worse than death-

73. Yeah, so you wouldn't do it. Neither would I. But we don't know his pain.
Or the pain of those who have lost loved ones because of this vile regime.

Sadly, I have a feeling that this is going to get much worse before it really gets any better. Much more blood will be spilt, and lives lost. We are dealing with truly evil men who will stop at nothing to claim all that they feel ought to be theirs. I can't really blame anyone for not wanting to stick around and suffer through this long and terrible battle.

64. If he was going to do that, he could have really gone out with a bang
and doused himself in gasoline on the street behind "Fox and Friends" and lit a match.

66. KoolAid ALERT! This article is KoolAid! Do NOT drink!
There was no note. The facts are:

Suicide with no note.
Happened at ground zero.

The rumors are:

Despondent democrat.

To this reporter, that equals Democratic Martyr.

That is classic KoolAid! DO NOT DRINK!

67. Good to see the compassionate conservatives are still around
Bobbie Jensen, 54, a Republican from Phoenix, said that while she understood how Bush's victory disturbed those who dislike him, Ground Zero is not the place to act on those emotions.

"You can be upset about the war, about Bush, but this is a sacred place," she said.

Translation: Democrats, if you want to kill yourselves, don't do it on a holy Republican landmark.

71. ticapnews.. only republicans may exploit Ground Zero
I read Bobbie Jensen's remarks too...what a hypocrite. Republicans like bush & guilliani may be responsible for Ground Zero being there, incompetent as they are, but they sure as hell don't own it. They used 9/11 like a mop for their convention. I feel really sorry for this young man, obviously he wasn't well, but I know quite a few people who have entertained the same thought, after having to endure bush's exploitation of that site. I'm only sorry my democratic party gave bush a free pass on his neglectful & incompetent behavior before 9/11.

74. Dear Bobbie, take heart. There may be a campaign ad in there somehwere.
Get Karl right on it, maybe the ad can lavish praise on the Patriot Act 2 or something.

78. Election may have been the last straw for this unfortunate man
But it was not "the" cause.

People usually commit suicide because of depression or physical illness. People who commit suicide as a protest always leave a note.

83. I understand...Living in Ga. Most do. When we said we can't take
another 4 years of Bush some really meant that ! This person was probably a real activist and worked his heart out and was very obssessed with ridding the country of Bush. I feel bad for his family. I feel bad for his fiance and Athens is one part of Ga that went blue. I understand ...I don't agree but understand that maybe he had all he could handle. We have no idea how the Monkey affected him personally.

85. Why "Man Kills Self"?
That's quite a reach and convoluted compared to say, "Suicide at Ground Zero" which is surely a more arresting title.

Show your support for the president, wear a FUCK BUSH button!
