Washington's favourite parlour game began in earnest yesterday as the capital hummed with speculation over the fate and prospects of President George W Bush's senior aides.
Current thinking in White House circles is that Mr Bush will not indulge in the mass culling that has marked the start of some second terms. He is intensely loyal.
But there are a number of officials itching for promotion or to leave – including those suffering from what Mr Bush yesterday called "burn-out".
"It's a great Washington sport to be talking about who's going to leave … and
handicapping my way of thinking," he said after his first cabinet meeting in three months.
