Anchor Glass Container Corp. earlier in the day decided to shut down the plant indefinitely, according to a release on the company Web site.
There is excess capacity in the glass industry, company officials said, and Anchor needed to improve its cash flow.
"This was a very difficult decision, particularly considering the dedication, talent and hard work of the South Connellsville employees," said Darrin Campbell, chief executive officer. "However, our recently completed analysis of Anchor Glass' existing capacity given the current industry environment indicated that this plant's economics could not be improved."
