White House Claims Mandate for Bush Agenda
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041104/ap_on_el_pr/bush_9

"The American people spoke clearly about the agenda they want for the next four years," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

Bush reached out for the broad support of Americans on Wednesday, even those who voted against him.

"I might point out that his arms are only so long, it's important for others to reach back as well," McClellan said. "We expect there will be Democratic leaders that want to reach back as well."

-snip-

After months of minimizing his exposure to journalists, Bush planned a news conference to outline his second-term agenda. Top priorities include nudging Congress forward on producing a budget and on intelligence reform legislation. On his own domestic agenda, the list includes retooling Social Security, making health care more affordable, and streamlining the tax code, McClellan said.

Here we go!  :grr:

37. FACT CHECK: Bush has NO mandate -- here are FOUR reasons...
... courtesy Chris Bowers and Dave Gonzo (back at American Politics Journal after a three-year absence):
Let me quote a few choice facts, courtesy of the very erudite Chris Bowers over at mydd.com:

ONE: As of 2:44 PM Vegas Standard Time, according to CNN.com, a total of 56,142,999 have voted AGAINST you. That is the largest number of people to have ever voted AGAINST a president in history.

TWO: You "won," if it is in fact to be believed that you won, with 51% of the popular vote. If that percentage were, say, 61%, even I could understand the claim that you have a mandate. Chris Bowers is right, you self-important chucklehead: "1% more than 50% is not a mandate but a bare, thin, majority."

And not much of one, at that.

THREE: Before September 11th, 2001, your F-score was in the mid-forty percent range. You were losing the support and trust of your own party. Then, after my home city was attacked by a gang of Saudi mass murderers, your F-score hovered around 80%. Bowers pointed out that two years ago the pundits practically guaranteed you'd win by a landslide. Now, only half of the people in this country who bother to get out and vote support you.

FOURTH: Again, I quote Bowers -- "A president who leads a divided country owes it to all Americans to lead fairly or have his party face the consequences beginning in 2006. No one else is here to blame."
Read the whole megillah here.

23. That's why I got into politics in
2000..so I could fight not to have my future Social Security "privatized"!

And I'm not the only one who doesn't want that!

Wouldn't it be AWFUL if Kerry actually won and bush stole votes from the computer machines..and is implimenting all these "mandates" on a population majority that DOES NOT WANT THEM?!

40. Please vote in aol "mandate" poll to show our disagreement.
aol's top story includes a poll on whether or not Bush has a mandate. I voted and the results show that 52% of the poll takers say YES and 48% say NO. If you are on aol please go and vote on this poll so that they can see how much we dispute his appropriating such a mandate.

After four years of ignoring Democrats, refusing to meet with Democratic groups, campaigning only for those who would sign Loyalty oaths, NOW he wants to open his arms? And we are supposed to all rally 'round him and say "Sure, George...you and your boyz fcuked us in the ass without grease, but just go right ahead and privatize SS and escalate all the wars you want, and give all the treasury to your friends. After all, George, WE'RE ALL AMERICANS IN THIS TOGETHER!"

That is something they will only have by force. Or coersion. They are pathetic, and it's laughable. Hitler had a mandate the same way they do.

22. We and the Iraqis are now in the same boat
Face it: we're dealing with an authoritarian and an authoritarian culture that supports him. We thought it couldn't happen here. It slipped in the back door, through the religion and Anglo-Germanic ethnic plurality that we have grown used to in the US. There is nothing NORMAL about either the religion or the culture. They are an aberration of humanity, the only true race of AUTHORITARIANS ever to walk the earth.

They believe that by stepping on our neck and beating on us they can make us grow to respect and love them. They have no respect or love for us because we have not hurt them enough. Whatever peace the world can achieve, these people will insist on destroying it. Whatever wealth the world can create, these people will insist on usurping it then setting it ablaze. They are truly the goyim: "God"'s chosen people, if you believe in a god who is out to ruin his own creation.

27. I wrote down 2 sentences from the press conference:
"I'll reach out to everyone who shares our goals." (very bipartisan--NOT)

"I earned political capital in the campaign and now I intend to spend it." (no ambiguity there)

Not that this is surprising. The SOP is, as it has always been, to steamroll ahead.

31. Bush just doesn't understand the words he uses.
You don't reach out to people who share your goals. You don't have to. And you don't earn political capital in a campaign built on lies and negative smears. What Bush "earned" was the power of the office. He's nuts if he thinks he is going to be given things he hasn't earned, like -- trust, respect, the benefit of the doubt. Those things go to good, respectable, people. Not him.

42. Mandate, schmandate...2% doesn't make a mandate.
He also needs a lesson in what "political capital" is, and why in 2000, after failing to get even the popular vote, he did not have any to spend, contrary to what he said in his speech this morning. However, if he wants to consider it that way, even in his first term he began deficit spending of his "political capital", the balance sheet at this point is negative.
