Petro proposes job cuts - 11,500 (Ohio) state workers would be eliminated
http://www.columbusdispatch.com/news-story.php?story=dispatch/2004/11/04/20041104-C1-01.html

In what apparently will be his first strike in the 2006 gubernatorial campaign, Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro will outline a plan today to slash 11,500 state jobs and cut more than $1 billion a year from state spending.

Calling the state’s executive branch "bloated," Petro wants to revamp the 23 cabinet-level departments and more than 270 boards and commissions.

He would reduce the number of cabinet agencies to nine and chop numerous middle-management positions and consolidate administrative functions for regulatory and licensing boards performing similar duties, such as those dealing with medical practitioners.

He also says extending last year’s 1-cent increase in the state sales tax beyond its June 30 expiration date "would be a mistake." The tax generates $1.3 billion a year.

5. Ah, here comes the local version of the "mandate"
But, that must be what "center-right" Ohio wants if I read the NYT and other sources correctly 'cause people like this have always cried about the big government!

reap what ya sow I guess . Welcome to my reality: I live in Texas. Take a look at your future, it ain't pretty but it sure boosts church attendance at the more rigid, bigoted denominations!

83. 2nd term mandate= "No help to working people at any cost."
It's a shame but first Federal social service spending is slashed to give tax cuts to the wealthy and to feed the war machine, next state spending to benefit its citizens will be cut to feed the outsourcing machine that will undoubtedly replace the state job cuts.

People deserve the government they vote for.

He wants to save a fucking penny in sales tax (at a cost of $1.3B) and eliminate 11,500 jobs (at a savings of $1B).

So where is the other $300,000,000.00 in cuts going to come?

113. Oh, please -- I live in Ohio and I worked my heart out
for the K-E campaign. I've been volunteering since June with hardly a day off.

Please tell me you mean "Fuck (some of) Ohio." We really thought we were wining and are still reeling from our defeat. RURAL Ohio was not a big enough target, but the honchos called the inner cities and suburbs to be our main GOTV goal.

The suburb I live in was totally ignored because it wasn't a TARGET. And when we told them there were votes ripe for the picking out here, they didn't pay attention.

We're taking a little rest but we'll soon be ready to fight again.

Eric Fingerhut, for example . . .

27. It's Called Karma
And this is only the beginning, for those losing their jobs that did not vote for Bush, I am truly sorry. But for those that did vote for Bush, it couldn't happen to a more deserving group of people.

From this moment on, for me at least, there will be no sympathy for anyone who voted for Bush, none for their families either. If their children go hungry then it's their fault, if an elderly family member
dies because of a lack of healthcare or affordable prescription medicine, it's their fault, if a son or daughter is drafted and comes back in a box or with missing body parts, it's their fault.

I will not show them any sympathy, I will just look at them and tell them "it's your fault".

No more nice, no more Rodney King Get Along Club, no sympathy whatsoever. As for my being a Christian, well this is between me and God, and that is a private conversation.

Sorry, but maybe if this mis-administration causes enough pain and suffering, WE Ohioans will have the incentive to throw their asses out.

Let 'em eat the gay marriage ammendment. Sorry, but sometimes you have to tear something down to build it back up. I am an Ohioan living in VA (military) and I will not buy another product manufactured in that state. We made our bed, now lie in it.

maybe you misunderstand me....I'm saying HOPING for hardship on the whole state because half of it is insane....is....insane. Unfortunately, this isn't like the Civil War, where you had definable borders of the Mason Dixon line....all of us are leavened throughout the insane population, there's no way to attack them without attacking us.

Actually, it would be a hell of a lot easier if you could selectively affect those people who voted for Bush economically, but the economy don't work that way.

106. Received an email from Greg Palast about the voting in Ohio
I know you don't want to hear it. You can't face one more hung chad. But I don't have a choice. As a journalist examining that messy sausage called American democracy, it's my job to tell you who got the most votes in the deciding states. Tuesday, in Ohio and New Mexico, it was John Kerry.

Most voters in Ohio thought they were voting for Kerry. CNN's exit poll showed Kerry beating Bush among Ohio women by 53 percent to 47 percent. Kerry also defeated Bush among Ohio's male voters 51 percent to 49 percent. Unless a third gender voted in Ohio, Kerry took the state.

So what's going on here? Answer: the exit polls are accurate. Pollsters ask, "Who did you vote for?" Unfortunately, they don't ask the crucial, question, "Was your vote counted?" The voters don't know.

111. I worked my ass off in Ohio
I can't believe we had all those election protection volunteers just standing in front of the inner city polling places when we should have had them out coaxing the winos and homeless to vote with Thunderbird and grilled cheese sandwiches.

sounds like they're getting the bathtub ready.

I think we should go by the exit polls to determine which states are red or blue. Ohio stood in line for hours, only to have their votes stolen & now you're glad they're getting laid off.

55. I think we are attacking our friends
I'm as upset as anyone about the election, Ohio, etc., but it strikes me that this is aimed at folks (governmental employees) who more likely than not voted for Johnny, so this is more of a Repub attack on "those who were disloyal." I am not laughing and feel genuine pain for the poor folks who are innocently in the crosshairs of this latest tyranny. To those who voted for *, who cares.

A lot more than just the actual folks being laid off. It also will have a ripple effect on the service industry and retail there.

58. Calm down enough to read what's in front of you.
This article refers to what this guy is proposing as his platform in his run for governor in 2006. It's NOT going to happen this winter or this year. As Attorney General, he does not have the power to do any of this now. He COULD cut his own department and try outsourcing cases to private law firms.

I hope this gives time for all the Ohioans who voted for Kerry to convince their friends and neighbors to oppose this approach to govt.

Considering that fewer people vote in the primary maybe it would work out for this guy to get past the primary and get beat by a Democrat in the general election.

when we hear about upcoming lay-offs...we should get people on the ground to greet them as they are leaving the building for the last time.

"Did you just get laid-off?"

"You did? I'm so sorry...who did you vote for?"

"Kerry?...I'm so sorry. Here's my number...lets see if we can't get you a job using the power of DU."

or

"Bush?...Well...here ya go...the military is hiring...here are the enlistment papers."

88. In a blue state most likely
What people that live in the industrial states don't seem to grasp is that theirs are the first jobs to get outsourced. Urban areas have lots of knowledge workers (lawyers, accountants, marketing folks, etc.) whose jobs are more difficult to send overseas.

But, maybe they can keep warm and their bellies full with a heapin' helpin' of the anti-gay marriage amendment that they overwhelmingly passed.

I hope no one on this board actually wishes hardship on anyone else, no matter who they voted for.

Because the majority of Ohio voters voted for *Asshat doesn't make them the enemy. Neither would it if any other 'Red' state had the same problems. If one suffers, we all suffer.

The fact is, we are headed toward a reckoning in America and we will ALL suffer much before it is turned back in the right direction. It would be nice if justice doled out punishment in fitting doses, but it does not. We are all going to have to pay for the disastrous mistakes of the few.

I've seen and agree with some words that have been posted here a number of times recently: 'A drunk has to hit bottom before he can begin recovery.' We are well on our way. Batten down the hatches and be prepared to ride out the storm.
