Bin Laden warns of retaliation
Osama bin Laden says in a full Internet broadcast of a video, partly aired by Al Jazeera last week, that George W. Bush had dragged America into a quagmire in Iraq and warned of retaliation for Iraqi deaths.

In the video, posted on websites on Wednesday often used by Islamists as results from the U.S. presidential election were being announced, bin Laden said Bush had ignored advice against waging "an unjustified war on Iraq for which there would be no end".

"The black gold (oil) blinded him and he put his personal interests above the general interests of America so the war took place, many died, American money was squandered and Bush was dragged into a quagmire in Iraq which threatens his future," the al Qaeda leader said in the tape, dated October 24.

"More than 15,000 of our people were killed and tens of thousands wounded and more than 1,000 of your people (Americans) were killed and tens of thousands wounded. Bush's hands are sullied with the blood of those on both sides just for oil and to employ his private companies," bin Laden said.

8. When read in context ...
In conclusion, I tell you in truth, that your security is not in the hands of Kerry, nor Bush, nor al-Qaida.
No.

Your security is in your own hands. And every state that doesn't play with our security has automatically guaranteed its own security.

52. I have a hunch that you would know from reading the original Arabic
The dual meaning of state, which really is only pertinent in American English, is probably not a meaning that is inferred by the Arabic term used in the speech.

55. An arabic translator
...discussed on one of the talking head shows (either CNN or MSNBC, cannot remember precisely) the use of the specific words that OBL used in his "address." He said that when making that phrase, he used the word that translates to STATE, NOT NATION STATE. When the big, tanned O said state, he meant Ohio, Texas, etc., not the nation. He made rather a big deal about it, and I find it amazing that the rest of the lamestream media is slow out of the gate on covering the actual words that ole O had to say. Of course, we are the only country in the world that does not get any significant war coverage, why should we get any real coverage of that event? Dictatorships tell the people what they 'need' to know, and the fearless leader makes that decision....it sucks!

60. Juan Cole weighed in on the meaning of "state" as used by Osama
Bin Laden says that such a "state" should not trifle with Muslims' security. He cannot possibly mean that he thinks Rhode Island is in a position to do so. Nor can he be referring to which way a state votes, since he begins by saying that the security of Americans is not in the hands of Bush or Kerry. He has already dismissed them as equivalent and irrelevant, in and of themselves.

Moreover, the way he uses "wilayah" is strange if he meant a Rhode Island kind of state. He should have said "ayy wilayah min al-wilayaat," "any state among the states" or some such diction.

Since MEMRI's conclusion is impossible given what else Bin Laden says, then we must revisit their philological point. It is true that in modern standard Arabic, wilayah means "state" or "province" and that al-Wilayaat al-Muttahaddah is the phrase used to translate "United States." A state in the sense of government or international Power would more likely nowadays be "dawlah" or "hukumah."

<snip>

I think archaicism is a more likely explanation than what linguists call "interference" from other languages for Bin Laden's diction here. But I am quite sure for the reasons of logic given above that he means "government" by the word, not state as in province, in this speech.

we're Americans too. I for sure ain't gonna weep for no attack brought on by bush's arrogancy and those who voted for him. I don't even give a crap about those dumb soldiers in Iraq dying for a stupid rich person like bush and family. My step-son is out there too risking his life while bush doesn't pay him enough to feed his family. That's suppost to make me proud? That's just right stupid in my book.

26. I have the utmost respect for you and your stepson
it is maddening that this little pretender, this false, smirking little coward can prance around in a uniform he didn't wear and talk about "sacrifice." I had friends who never made it back from Nam and the country feels the same way now as it did in 1972. Bless your step-son and you; I pray he returns home safely; what this country has become, because of Chickenshit Bush, is a tragedy and a disgrace.

and there will be no one to blame but AWOL. But they certainly will try to blame others. November 2nd showed the world that a majority of Americans condone what * is doing in Iraq, and we will collectively pay the price.

I'd be willing to bet that nation-states are not the only ones with nukes now. Their problem will be obtaining the control and detonation controlers necessary to trigger.

As far as delivery systems are concerned, never mind the ICBMs, FED EX will do it far cheaper and easier.

47. The real questions.
Most will say, why? But, the real questions are when, where, and with what! I don't think we will see another "big production." Since he has said he wants to hurt our economy, what would do more damage than scaring the hell out of people by hitting "soft" targets like Wal-Mart or other economic powerhouses? They had 19 terrorists take down four planes, what if they sent those 19 into 19 stores in various locales, this time suburban and rural, and blow themselves up in the middle of a store? It would be as "spectacular" as the Trade Center and Pentagon, but it would strike terror in the hearts of the those in the "Heartland." This is what scares me the most! He is insane, much like the president. I can only hope that Allah will strike compassion into his heart!
