Mine explosion kills Afghan official; police arrest Taliban commander
A mine explosion killed a government official and police arrested a mid-ranking Taliban commander in Afghanistan's troubled southeast, officials said.

The mine exploded in Char Cheno, a district of Uruzgan province, on Tuesday afternoon, killing deputy mayor Manan Akhundzada and one of his bodyguards, Gov. Jan Mohammed said late Tuesday.

Four other guards traveling in Akhundzada's vehicle were injured.

Mohammed said the mine was freshly laid, and accused Taliban militants of the attack.
