LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Popular "Beverly Hillbillies" star Buddy Ebsen has died, aged 95, in a southern California hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said on Monday.
Ebsen, who was placed in intensive care last month suffering from an undisclosed illness, died on Sunday morning, the spokeswoman at Torrance Memorial Medical Center said.
Ebsen started his career as a dancer on Broadway and later starred in a number of MGM musicals. He became known to a new generation in the 1960s in his role as family patriarch Jed Clampett in the television sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies" and later as a private investigator in the 1970s TV show "Barnaby Jones."
"The Beverly Hillbillies" aired for nine seasons, from 1962 to 1971, making it one of CBS' longest-running sitcoms. The first two years, it was the number one rated show on television attracting as many as 60 million viewers a week.
