Oregon medical pot measure draws fire
Oregon medical pot measure draws fire

Amount allowed would increase

October 31, 2004

SALEM, Ore. – A measure on Oregon's ballot Tuesday to expand the medical use of marijuana is drawing fire from state district attorneys and the White House drug czar, who says it would turn the state into a "safe haven for drug-trafficking."

Measure 33 would make it easier for ailing people to obtain marijuana and allow them to possess more of it – up to a pound at a time. It requires that indigent patients be given free marijuana.

Yet White House drug czar John Walters, echoing criticism by Oregon's district attorneys, calls Measure 33 a fraud on Oregon voters and a back-door attempt to legalize marijuana.

Under Oregon law, qualified patients are allowed to grow and use small amounts of marijuana without fear of prosecution as long as a doctor says it might help their condition. The measure on Tuesday's ballot would create state-regulated dispensaries authorized to supply up to 6 pounds of marijuana per year to qualified patients, and the patients could possess 1 pound at any given time.

1. White House drug czar John Walters
Needs to find a "real" job-- rather than harassing some terminal Cancer patient's search for pain relief in their final living days on earth.

He is scum.

5. This measure
is directed to people living in pain, most of which can not afford high prescription costs.

The czar should have to live w/the pain we do for a year before he he is allowed to open up his uneducated mouth.

STAY OUT OF OREGON!

I voted YES on Measure 33!

4. I heard in Alaska they have a measure on the ballot to legalize
Pot for all adults. Not just for medical use but totally legalize it for possession and for sales of it. Also something about the state being able to tax it.

6. That seems to be true.
Both opponents and supporters of Ballot Measure 2 — which would make it legal for those 21 and older to grow, use or distribute marijuana and allow the government to regulate sales — seized the murder case to bolster their arguments.

14. Re: Kerry
He has publicly stated that he will get the feds out of the business of prosecuting state medical marijuana patients, so there is some hope for sanity.

As an Oregonian who is REALLY hoping this measure passes and the upcoming Supreme Court decision goes the right way, we could actually see a change in the climate.

The current Oregon law isn't bad, but a lot of people just aren't able to grow for themselves. A friend of mine just got his med card, he has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair, no way in heck he could tend plants, a dispensary system would make things much better.
