Bush continues to push for state's coveted votes

The tug for Florida's critical 27 electoral votes intensifies with visits by the contenders amid cries of intimidation as voters line up to vote early.

ORLANDO - President Bush touched down Saturday night in the heart of the biggest contested state in this nail-biter of a presidential race, declaring himself the best leader for troubled times.

Bush, arriving here after a day of campaigning across the Midwest, sought to seize the momentum in the center of Florida's swing voting region -- the very area that could decide the presidency three days from now.

The lines at the early voting polls provided a backdrop for increasingly bitter recriminations of mischief: U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and Kerry's Florida campaign chairman, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Miami, accused state Republicans of targeting primarily black precincts in order to challenge Democratic voters. They noted that in Miami-Dade, 59 percent of the predominate black precincts have one or more GOP poll watchers signed up, compared to 37 of the white districts.

Republicans said they were targeting their ''weakest and strongest'' precincts -- the ''weakest'' precincts where Gore won by more than 65 percent in 2000, along with precincts where Bush won in 2000 by more than 65 percent.

If SoCalDem sees this: I think he's wearing that crappy blue checked shirt again which hides sweat rings and his wire better.
